We felt like eating some Indian food so we chose this restaurant (I suppose the only Indian food restaurant in Assen). It's a bit of a weary looking restaurant and it seemed that evening that the (only) cook was angry and had a quarrel with the (only) waiter. Which was actually quite funny. Nevertheless, we were served quite promptly and kindly.
Favorite Dish: We had a 3-course set menu for two (19 euro per person). It was tasty but unremarkable. Medium hot was as hot as your mum's mashed potato. I mean: it wasn't! If you want hot, either order the hottest dish on the menu or tell the waiter. Though I fear that if you do, hot will be unbearably hot!
'Next Door' is the little sister of no. 18, Gulle Gans (which is a restaurant).
Gulle Gans Next Door is obviously popular as a lunch hot spot since the whole place, including the outside terrace, was completely full at lunch time (it was a Tuesday). Definitely popular with women, there were very few men!
The lunchroom does not claim to be all-organic, but the bread and various other products are and the general quality is high.
Favorite Dish: I enjoyed the Thai coconut soup with a helping of fresh, dark bread. The goat's cheese salad was very good too. Lots of little details, like the cashew nuts, a few sliced sundried tomatoes, good dressing, good salad, all made it quite memorable.
We paid about 25 euro in total for the 2 of us.
The name Hertenkamp is meaning Deer Park. This restaurant is situated at the edge of the Asser Bos (Forest of Assen). From the restaurant you have a fantastic view at the historical Deer Park of Assen. My parents live opposite the Deerpark, so regularly we have our family dinners, their birthday parties or wedding receptions here.
The actual building is from 1974. The orginal building dated back from the 19th century. I have a lot of memories of the Hertenkamp from the time I went to the grammarschool in Assen. We had here our schoolparties and a few years ago the reunion of my former class. It´s a pity the building don´t have the same characteristique appearance anymore of these older days.
In 2005 the restaurant the different halls are restyled. Change artist Marthijn de Groot made murals in the different colourful halls, named after Chagall, Dali and Picasso. Also in the restaurant you can find paintings, a nice piece of pottery and even a painted table of Marthijn de Groot.
"De Gulle Gans" is a small restaurant in the center of town. You can't leave Assen without having had dinner here!! The owner of this restaurant has traveled a lot herself and she took a lot of souvenirs back home. Some of them she used for decorating the restaurant.
You don't get a lot of privacy while you're eating, but with the excelent atmosphere you don't even notice.
Beware that you have to make a reservation because the restaurant is very popular and not very large!!
Favorite Dish: The menu changes every 6 weeks. Some dishes stay, but every time there will be new ones added. There's enough variety for everyone. They serve meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. The home made bread with herbs is wonderfull as a starter.

The Markt in Assen at the northern end of the Kerkstraat is a nice place to sit at one of the many terraces of the cafes and restaraurants in this old part of the citycentre.
You can just come for a drink, but also have dinner. You can choose Italian (Bella Italia & Isobella), Chinese (Lotus), French and other food.
The most special restaurant in this area is the Gulle Gans (Markt 18) with Mediterrenean food. It's necessary to make reservations (0592-302667).
Go and have a look for yourself and experience the special atmosphere and interior.
In the Kerkstraat in the citycentre of Assen we found a tiny and cozy restaurant.
We like very much the relaxed atmosphere, the lovely interior and the friendly staff.
It´s a few minutes walk from the theatre de Kolk, so we had sometimes dinner here before we visited the theatre.
Favorite Dish: All the meals I have chosen were delicious up till now !!
In the centre of the city Hotel de Jonge has the popular Grandcafe Centraal with a beautiful terrace.
It´s just near the Brink and the historical citycentre.
It´s a nice place for a drink at the terrace. And if you stay too long, you can take a delicious meal.
Favorite Dish: I like the different salads.
Ponderosa, Rumenian restaurant.

- Kitchen opened until 24:00
- Lunch possible from 12:00
- Reservation prefered
Favorite Dish: I don't have a favourite menu here. The only thing is that it should be vegetarian.
Old ambiance, many antiques
Favorite Dish: A cup of capucino..... ;-)
'Bojangles' used to be my favourite restaurant. It is a grillroom, but there are new owners now. I saw that the menu isn't as special anymore. Bojangles used to have a unusual menu! Like alligator or shark meat! And I have to say...it was delicious!
Unfortunately the menu isn't like that anymore, but it's still very cozy and nice.
'De Tijd' is very nice as well. When you don't have much money it's a nice place to go to. It's cozy and very nice. The menu isn't very special, but I heard the food is great. Also a big reccomendation!
'Bojangles' is very nicely decorated, like an old blues cafe. On the walls you see paintings of great blues and jazz artists and posters of films like 'west side story'.
I haven't been in 'De Tijd' personally, but I heard from others that it is very nice and comfortable, more info to come about this restaurant!
Favorite Dish: I still love the fried mushrooms in 'Bojangles'. I still have to try something at 'De Tijd', but I will tell something about that here very soon!
When you like bowling De Hertenkamp is a good place to go to. Before or after a bowling game you can eat in the restaurant.
When the weather is nice you can sit outside.
Hmm at age 10 you don't really recall any names and especially not names of restaurants or anything like that...sorry!
