Every year in august at the 2nd tuesday is the Gouden Pijl (Gold Arrow),a huge cycling event in the citycente of Emmen. The first Gouden Pijl in 1976 had allready 25.000 visitors. Only in 1994 and 1995 there was no cycling course. After a new start in 1996 the Gouden Pijl is one of the best five criteria in the Netherlands and an event of name.
Many known names as Sean Kelly, Laurent Fignon, Stephen Roche, Jan Raas, Joop Zoetemelk, Hennie Kuiper, Gerrie Knetemann, Erik Breukink, Guido Bontempi, Francesco Moser, Michel Pollentier, Phil Anderson, Raul Alcala, Jelle Nijdam, Greg LeMond, Gert-Jan Theunisse, Miguel Indurain, Mario Cipollini, Claudio Chiapucci, Stuart O' Grady, Jeroen Blijlevens, Jan Ullrich, Servais Knaven, Erik Dekker and Ivan Basso appeared at the start of the Gouden Pijl/Golden Arrow.
The programm starts in the afternoon. The 100km race of the professionals is at 7.30pm. The total parcours is only in the citycentre, so the public can see passing them several times. In 2006 the new Golfparc Sandur Emmen opened its area. The 9 hole golfcourse with B-status is nicily designed in a scenic setting south of Emmen not far from the Rietplas, a lake for leisure, and the living and holiday Park Parc Sandur with several facilities like a supermarket, other sportfacilities and restaurants.
The Golfpark has attractive prices and is accessible for a large public. The Golfpark is suitable for getting the GVB (golfing skill proof) and the registering of your handicap. The Golfpark has a driving-range (with 25 places, partly covered), a puttinggreen, a training bunker, a shop and a pleasant club house annex brasserie with a lovely terrace overlooking the green area.
In spring I was invited to have a look at the golfpark, to try to hit the ball at the driving range and have a delicious dinner in the Fairway Brasserie. On Saturday 14 October 2006 the Province Drenthe, the Municipality Emmen and the Foundation World Runners organized a marathon 'Dwars door Drenthe' (straight through Drenthe) on the provincial highway N381 from Hoogersmilde to Emmen. It was an unique event to celebrate the reconstruction of this highway, which was car free during most part of this day.
The finish was in the citycentre of Emmen. Around 1500 participants of the marathon and half marathon reached the finish encouraged by the public to complete the last meters after a heavy parcours with adverse wind.
It was a very succesful sport event, so many people asked to organise this marathon every year. So who knows what will happen the next years. Leave a Comment

The last year there are not only cultural performances during the festivals. Especially for the youngsters there are lots of sport activitivies as well.
During the Full Colour Festival I saw panna football. In summer 2006 I there was a basketball clinics at the square between the two department stores V&D and C&A. There were lots of participants, but spectators as well. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

The FC Emmen Univé stadion in Emmen, more popularly known as De Meerdijk. was one of the places were several matches of the Fifa Youth World Championship took place in Juin 2005. In Emmen played group F, being Brazil, Nigeria, South Korea and Switzerland.
Usually I don't go to the stadion for watching soccer, but these international matches were a great opportunity. I planned to watch Nigeria-Brazil, but this first match was sold out. When I got free tickets for one of the other matches I didn't hesitate any moment... The international atmosphere in the stadion was really great ! Leave a Comment Theme: Sports Watching
