Since 1997 there is a special chess tournament in the Netherlands. Every year in the holidayweek of October the Essent Chess Tournament will be played in the city of Hoogeveen. The 10th Essent Chess Tournament will take place from 20 to 28 october, 2006.

World Champion GM Veselin Topalov (BUL) is to play in a Crown group. Beside Topalov V. the Crown group will be represented by GMs Mamedyarov S. (AZE), Sokolov I. (NED), Polgar J. (HUN).

There will be several competitions: a Crown Group, a strong Essent Open, an Amateur Tournament, a pub tournament and an event for youth. And finally there will be a double round robin tournament.

The players are going to play with pieces of glass since Hoogeveen has a famous glass museum and October is in Hoogeveen the month of glass. The chess pieces are made by the glass artist Cees van Olst who especially for this event created an official Staunton no. 5 model out off glass.

This has trully been one of those traditions ... ice skating in The Netherlands. When I was a little kid I learned it from my father and now I'm the one teaching my children the same. It's just funny and great how it works, doesn't it? But because of the climate change the natural ice hasn't been around much in my home country. The last period of serious frost was 11 years ago in 1997. Iris and Sam weren't even born then. So not much to teach for me towards my kids.

But this year (2008 - 2009) our country finally has a serious period of frost and all the ditches, canals and lakes are frozen and secure enough to ice skate on. Time for me to learn my kids ... yeaheee!!! This is how it works: Ice skating works because the metal blade at the bottom of the ice skate shoe can glide with very little friction over the surface of the ice. However, slightly leaning the blade over and digging one of its edges into the ice ("rockover and bite") gives you the ability to increase friction and control your movement at will to go straight forward or make a turn. So here we go ... !!!

Well I can't repeat this too often! Make sure your on the safe side of the skating experience. Her are two dangers to have a look at: The first danger in ice skating is falling on the ice, which definately dependents on the quality of the ice surface and the skill and experience of the skater. An additional danger of falling is injury caused by the skater's own metal blades or those of other skaters.

The second, and more serious, danger is falling through the ice into the freezing water underneath when skating outdoors on a frozen body of water. This can lead to serious injury or death due to shock, hypothermia or drowning. It is often difficult or impossible for skaters to climb out of the water back onto the ice due to the ice repeatedly breaking, the skater being weighed down by skates and thick winter clothing, or the skater becoming disoriented under water.

The city of Hoogeveen is since a few years home to a new ice-skating rink at the Kerkplein (Central Town Square) right at the city centre. It's designed to compliment activities and events scheduled at the square throughout the winter holiday period (always 2 weeks around the Christmas holidays). Ice-skating in the square offers residents and visitors a family-friendly activity to enjoy in the middle of Hoogeveens's vibrant downtown. The (new) rink welcomes ice-skaters of all ages with special holiday hours and you can rent all the equipment you need.

With a low admission price of only €3 (+skate rental €2), it’s the coolest way to add a little winter chill to the holidays without spending lots of funds. Scheduled special events include free youth hockey clinics, a free concert series, a free Winter Holiday Festival, weekend Kids Zone interactive entertainment, an outdoor Cityscape Art Gallery Exhibit, and more. Over the past years it has become the number one winter destination for families. It's centrally located in the heart of Hoogeveen, the facility is easily accessible by car, bus, bike or rail.
