Vietnamese Loempia Stall: Fresh and handmade.
The city centre of Meppel has a lot of food to offer. Traditional Dutch rolls with kroketten, a New York style bagel, a chicken melt, ham and cheese sandwiches, et cetera. Whenever I’m in the city centre I wind my way through the stalls of the market on the Kerkplein or the ones situated in the Hoofdstraat, for my favorite Vietnamese spring rolls.
Fresh from the fryers a Vietnamese couple serves up their “handmade” spring rolls (note: there is also a vegetarian option) with a sweet chili sauce, a hot sauce or a combination from both. For just € 1 you can burn your tongue on a fresh spring roll (or your throat on the spicy sauce). The low price makes me even go to lunch here and order 5 spring rolls with the spicy sauce so even after lunch I’m still on fire. On quiet days the nice couple behind the counter are in for a talk. The woman might sing you a Vietnamese lullaby or tell you stories about how she “escaped” her country and ended up here.
A perfect warm up on an autumn or winters day, the fresh spring rolls on the Hoofdstraat are a good place for a snack (or lunch). Best combined with a dip of spicy sauce and a drip of people watching.

De Brasserie is a main stopover for lunch, coffee, a drink or dinner. But I mostly go there during shopping for a coffee!
