Wthin the borders of the municipality of Emmen in the far south east of the Province Drenthe at the German border between the villages Zwartemeer and Weiteveen is a big Nature Reserve of moorland and peat swamp.
The Bargerveen is the largest remain of the former Boertangermoeras, covering East-Drenthe, East Groningen and a part of Germany. It was originally 300.000 hectare with 160.000 hectare in the Netherlands.
In the 19th century started the peat-digging.
In 1968 the governement bought the first hectares. After the Purit factory stopped the peat-digging (for the production of norit) in 1995, the actual 2000 hectare Nature Reserve is completed.
It is a nice area for walking and birdwatching.
There are marked walking trails between the one and 7.5 KM in all the three parts of the Reserve, the Meerstalblok in the north, the Amsterdamse Veld in the middle and the Schoonebeker Veld in the south.

In Emmen is created one af the international famous land-art objects of the deceased Robert Smithson from the USA. In 1971 Smithson was invited to participate in the international exhibition ''Sonsbeek 71'' in Arnhem.
Feeling that the dutch landscape was allready very cultivated, he asked to work at a disrupted site instead. So they found a virtually exhausted sand quarry that was destinated to be converted in a recreational area in Emmen. This work became his first effort to reclaim an industrially devastated landscape through art.
The Broken Circle is intriguing for its symmetry of opposites: semi circles of water and soil, canal and jetty. Climbing the Spiral Hill you have a good view at the circle below.
The earthwork lies norht-east of Emmen and is reachable from the Emmerhoutstraat (road between Emmerschans and Weerdinge).

Emmen is an enterprising modern municipality. A reminder of life in the huge fens of the province of Drenthe in the past is still there today in the form of a large bridge of tree trunks 3 m (10 ft) thick and a faithful reconstruction of a home in the fens in the Barger-Compascuum Open-Air Museum. In Emmen itself, particularly worth seeing is the Noorder Dierenpark zoo with its large butterfly garden. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful zoological gardens in Europe. Sure worth a visit!

There are many moors, heaths and sand deserts to be visited in Drenthe, some of them with sheep and sheperds.
Also, there ar some nice stately homes and castles to be seen.
