Almere is located on the Flevolijn, the route through Flevoland which connects Lelystad to Amsterdam. Connections to Amsterdam are very good with trains running at least twice an hour, even more during peak times. Not all trains go to/from Amsterdam Centraal, so that you may have to change at some Amsterdam station to reach your final destination. Most of the trains go further on to Zuidholland, so that connections to other Randstad cities such as Den Haag or Rotterdam are good too. Lelystad, at the end of the Flevolijn, is also well connected to Almere.

The bus system in Almere is well developed and buses run frequently until midnight. It’s run by a private company called Connexxion under the name “Maxx Almere”. The (in)famous dutch strippenkaart is used on them too, so be aware of how many zones you are travelling through or ask the driver. There are special bus lanes all over the city so that buses are very quick and punctual. I guess they were built in anticipation of future growth and the future construction of tram lines.
