Favorite thing: Town centre: Lely's Column ('De Zuil van Lely'). A tall column - 32 meters! - with Lely's statue on top of it. Its height is very exceptional by Dutch standards for a statue dedicated to just one person. The column was erected in honour of civil engineer C. Lely who played a crucial role in the drainage of large parts of the former Zuider Sea and the creation of the IJsselmeerpolders. The town of Lelystad was named after him - an even more exceptional honour! The statue itself, on the other hand, is merely a copy of another statue that stands at Kornwerderzand and therefore not an original work of art at all ...
