Being active belongs to the island's habits
Biking and hiking is something you just need to do on an island like Ameland. The urge to see the special places of this little paradise makes you dwell on foot or by bike around the many sites. Ameland anyway invites to be active or even sportive, which will become clear in the next few sports tips. However, above all stands the biking and hiking as this is just a must here.
Equipment: Bikes can be rented on various locations.
With wide beaches there are many possibilities
Ameland's wide beaches invite to several beach sports. One can simple let up a cait (dragonflyer) or go further with caitsurfing or -riding. The same is with sails on wheels or windsurfing. Beach activities however can also mean just play in the sand, which when water gets involved, means long walks to the waterline (sometimes almost 500 meters away).
Swimming in the sea: be careful
Swimming is of course very inviting with the sea nearby. But one has to be warned for the tides and currents that are quite strong and extreme in these parts of the North sea. Where-ever there is a sign, take it to your heart and don't go into the water. Good swimmers have gotten into trouble here and had to be rescued by the Amelander brigade.
Horseriding on long wide beaches
Some only can dream about it, but here it is possible. Horsebackriding over long and wide beaches. in the low season maybe all alone or just with your boy / girlfriend. Is that not a splendid idea. Well, go to Ameland and experience it.
Equipment: Horses available in maneges at Ballum and Hollum.
With two seas, there's bound to be some boats
Ameland offers many ways to get on the water. Sailing, boating, sea fishing, surfing, waterskiing, speedboats ... you name it, they offer it. Especially from Nes there are many ways in exploring and enjoying the "Wadden" sea and North sea.
Or maybe you;ld rather go up in the air
From the airport in Ballum there are airplanes leaving to push you out on great hights (-:
Parachuting, paragliding and also tandemjumps are organised from the village in the centre of the island. Floating above such magnificent place must be a wonderful thing.
There are also roundtrips by plane possible, so you don;t necessarily have to jump out to enjoy the view.
Equipment: Everything available at Ballum airfield.
