The Italian restaurants in the Netherlands have changed in style probably more than any other genre of restaurant over the past several decades. Even as recently as 50 years ago, the term "Italian restaurant" conjured images of red and white checkered tablecloths, carafes of middling Chianti, and a red sauce-heavy menu with classics like chicken. This was more the image we had in the Netherlands about an Italian restaurant than it was truly authentic Italian. This is not what you will find in the restaurant Ristorante Pizzeria Paolo, which is located right at the historical city center of Heerenveen. Ristorante Pizzeria Paolo is a lively moderately-priced restaurant that serves typical Italian food and pizza. You'll find lots of good appetizers, typical pasta dishes, great seafood and pizzas.

We have been to Paolo many times and we always like it much. Do keep in mind that you definitely need to make a reservation, because it is always very crowded. Therefore the staff doesn’t have time to recommend dishes for you. We sometimes like to try based on whether we want meat of seafood, but that is not possible. Just order from the card and you will be fine.

Favorite Dish: I would recommend to try the fresh pasta with calamari, tomatoes, and olives which is very good every time.

Tjaarda Oranjewoud: Tucked away in the woods.

by Jerelis Written Dec 4, 2013
    Enjoying some nice pie.

Tjaarda Oranjewoud is part of the Golden Tulip Hotel chain. If you visit their website you will read that it is an excellent base to discover towns like Zwolle, Groningen and Leeuwarden. This might a bit weird as those cities are quite a drive to be honest. I would rather say that it is a great base to visit the amazing woods of Oranjewoud, the village of Heerenveen or the Frisian landscape.

Tjaarda is truly tucked away in the stately woods of Oranjewoud. This is the reason why we regularly visit Tjaarda. We simply love to hike our way along the beautiful mansions, the woods and the English garden. After our hike we think that a nice refreshment is well deserved and we end up at the terrace of Tjaarda. Usually we have a seat at the Grand Café Tjaarda where we can have an informal coffee or drink. The hospitality is great indeed. Or perhaps restaurant 'de Oranjerie' with its adjacent playground is the ideal place for you and your family? There are plenty of options at Tjaarda Oranjewoud's restaurants.

    Grandcafé 't Gerecht: Beautiful location.

The grand café ’t Gerecht in Heerenveen in truly located in a magnificent building. The so called Oenemastate building was a “stins’ (kind of a manor) built in 1640 by order of Amelius of Oenema. In 1951 it was sold to the city of Heerenveen and became it a cantonal court, which explains the name of the grand café. We visit this place regularly, first of all because of its location. The terrace can hold about 200 visitors and inside the manor you will find a separate restaurant and the grand café. We love to sit in the so called Plafonzaal where you can see amazing painted art on the ceiling dating back to 1663.

Second of all we can say that everything is delicious and mostly fresh and homemade. The atmosphere is fun and most people do return. The service has always been great, and we've been to Grandcafé ‘t Gerecht more times than we can count. So, our conclusion would be: It is always a pleasure to be here.

Favorite Dish: Heerenveens 12-uurtje. This lunch dish is great! It offers two slices of deep brown bread with amazing Carpaccio, a cup of fresh soup and a handmade kroket (deep-fried ragout filled snack coated with bread crumbs, a true dutch specialty). Just try it!
