Favorite thing: The main square of Leeuwarden is Zaailand. It is not a beautiful sqaure but it is right in the centre of the city. On the sqaure you can find a shopping mall, and on the sides of the square are many shops. Many buses stop here and it's only a few minutes walk from the Central Station. Every Saturday there is a market, where you can a lot of fresh dutch food. Throughout the year there are quite some events. One of them is a big party for students.
Just walk and look around, you'll discover a lot. Nice small alleys and the cafe's by the canal!
Fondest memory: Having a beer-fight with hundreds of other students in a tent in the middle of city! And loads of other really good memories!!
What I like a lot about Leeuwarden is the easy way to get around: walking! It's size makes transport unnescesary. There are busses, but there is not that much to see on the outskirts of the city.
All the interesting streets are not too far from each other. A bike makes it even more perfect, that wil easily take you around the whole city.
Everything on the map in the picture is walking-distance.

For shopping you should go to DRACHTEN for a walk to DOKKUM, the oldest city in the area, and for cycling and small adventure go till the AMELAND Island , to the Northest part of the Netherlands.
-Don't miss a visit to the dikes to the new land, in LAUWERSOOG / Oostmahorn, where you can watch the mainland to be in lower levels than the sea..Museum and restaurants exist in this area.
Try fish and fries with mayonaise.
Fondest memory: This is a so-called 'kop-hals-romp' farm (free translation: head-neck-trunk farm). It is not very clear on the picture but if you look well you will see the part with the windows (head), the large barn (trunk) and in between the smallest part (neck). You will see lots of these farms in Friesland.
Go sailing on a skûtsje, a traditional Frisian ship!
Fondest memory: You can see more of this in my sailing in Frisia TRAVELOGUE added to my NL page. And, I added a whole new TRAVELOGUE of my second sailing trip of 2001 to this page!
Favorite thing: Go and visit the centre of the city. It must be beautiful. I didn't see it all, because I came for the airshow, but you can't miss it.
Favorite thing: What I will always remember about Friesland is that it was a very 'airy' province where I have seen the most beautiful skies, probably due to the fact that the country is so flat.
Fondest memory: Franeker, a very lovely town with a magnificent renaissance style town hall built in the 17th century. In the tower there is a carillon with 25 clocks.
Visit one of the Wadden Islands
Fondest memory: The Wadden Sea is one of Europe's largest nature reserve. The islands are wonderful!
Leeuwarden is the city where Mata Hari was born.
Fondest memory: You can visit her house, that is now a museum for Frisian Literature.
Visit Stoffels Tobacco shop.
My father's cousin owns and operates the shop, so I'm doing my best to support the family business.
This ship is a typical example of what you can find along the canals.
In the rear you see the old railroad bridge of the former railroad to the airport.
