You can either go by train or by car.Go to www.ns.nl. Click on 'Reisinformatie'. Now you can set the language to English. When going by car, e.g. from Amsterdam, you could follow this route: Amsterdam, Utrecht, Zwolle, Leeuwarden. You should get there that way!
Leeuwarden is not that big a city, so you can go sight seeing on foot. Just go to the Tourist Information and buy a city-map. That should get you around!

    Interliner

Beside taking a train to Leeuwarden, you can also take the Interliner bus. The bus takes about the same time to get in Leeuwarden, but takes a totally differnent route in comparison to the train. Wheras the train goes through the east of the country, the bus goes through the west. You will go via the Afsluitdijk, a big dike that seperates the Waddenzee sea from the IJselmeeer lake. To take this bus you have to take the train to Alkmaar. From Amsterdam twice an hour there is an Intercity to Alkmaar. From Alkmaar you take the Interliner. From there take line 350 to Leeuwarden.

You can get here by plane, boat, car or train. It depends on where you are coming from. From Scandinavian countries it's best to come by boat. From Denmark or Germany you'd better go by car and from countries more south: go by car or train. Are you not living in Europe? Go by plane!
    by bus, car, bike.

The province of Friesland (where Leeuwarden is the capital of) has it's own railway system. It's called 'Noordnet'. Most other provinces have an Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) Railway system. For travelling it's not really a difference, but the Noordnet trains look different, ride on fuel and make shorter rides.

Its quite easy to reach Leeuwarden by train or car. Trains go there from the big Dutch cities and its about 2,5 hours from Amsterdam.
There are lots of buses going frequently to all parts of the city, till later in the evening, so u have no problem getting around. Of course its also possible to take a taxi but its not cheap!

In Winter you get around Friesland on skates. When there is a long period of frost the famous '11 stedentocht' will be skated. This is a more than 200 KM long tour that leads the skaters along the 11 cities of the province. From all over the country people come to Friesland to cheer up the skaters.
There is music and lots of 'Beerenburg' (spiced jenever)
The last '11 stedentocht' was in january 1997, so unfortunately only few foreigners ever get the chance to witness this.

    Travelling with (young) kids.

by Jerelis Written Mar 31, 2015

Are you nervous about taking your baby or child on a plane trip? You aren't alone, most parents are nervous about it. We have moved with the kids to Alkmaar by car this holiday and drove some distances by car on when we were there and we learned a few things that hopefully will help you.

    General:
Bring books, old favourite toys and new surprise toys. Do remember that balls are not a good idea as they can end up anywhere! Our best buys were definitely books, especially sticker books are great! They can peel the stickers off, are glossy, have thick pages to turn easy, have bright colours and come in endless subjects. They're a nice break from the other books your child might be tired of, too. Put aside fears of setting poor eating habits, and bring on the snacks! We told Iris: “Welcome to the world of boredom eating."

    Car:
Toy bars meant for stroller use are a big help in the car, as they often feature toys plus a snack cup, and are big and easy for you to grab from the front seat for refills. During the car trip it’s always a good idea to play a game and sing some songs. It sounds rather easy, but it does work!

    Finally:
We only have one last statement! Just do it! Don’t be afraid that it might go wrong. We have learned this, because we have been travelling with Iris from the beginning. She was only 6 weeks young when we had our first short vacation and stayed in a hotel. Iris has been used to it rather fast and (maybe because of it) has always been an easy kid to get along with.

    Train to Leeuwarden

    by martin_nl Updated Apr 4, 2011

From Amsterdam two intercity's an hour leave for Leeuwarden. At .06 and .36 past every hour. If you take the .06 train you will have to change in Amersfoort. If you take the .36 train it will take you directly to Leeuwarden. However this direct train takes about 10-15 minutes longer.

    Daytrip from Groningen

by aukjejetty Updated Apr 4, 2011

The train from Groningen to Leeuwarden is only one hour. If you are in Groningen and you have a day to spent, you could make a daytrip to Leeuwarden. The train leaves every half hour.

Take the train, it is the best option.
The bus system is good, but you won't need it in the city center because everything is in walking distance.

    Cycle!

Leeuwarden and surroundings is best to explore bicycle. You can rent a bike for Euro 7 from the shop at the Train Station.
