It Damshûs is a small open air museum dedicated to the extraction of peat and the people working in peat-extraction in the period from 1863 to the 1920s in this region.
The museum shows you the poor living and working conditions of the people living in this area. There are a number a small cottages of the peat workers, a small church, and some other buildings. It also tells the story of the fierce social battles which have been fought here for a better living. The area around Nij Beets is famous as one of the birthplaces of Socialism in the 1880s and 1890s in the Netherlands.
The museum also shows how the landscape has been transformed due to the peat extraction.
