    Travelling with (young) kids.

by Jerelis Written Jun 29, 2013

Are you nervous about taking your baby or child on a plane trip? You aren't alone, most parents are nervous about it. We have moved with the kids to Alkmaar by car this holiday and drove some distances by car on when we were there and we learned a few things that hopefully will help you.

Bring books, old favourite toys and new surprise toys. Do remember that balls are not a good idea as they can end up anywhere! Our best buys were definitely books, especially sticker books are great! They can peel the stickers off, are glossy, have thick pages to turn easy, have bright colours and come in endless subjects. They're a nice break from the other books your child might be tired of, too. Put aside fears of setting poor eating habits, and bring on the snacks! We told Iris: “Welcome to the world of boredom eating."

Toy bars meant for stroller use are a big help in the car, as they often feature toys plus a snack cup, and are big and easy for you to grab from the front seat for refills. During the car trip it’s always a good idea to play a game and sing some songs. It sounds rather easy, but it does work!

We only have one last statement! Just do it! Don’t be afraid that it might go wrong. We have learned this, because we have been travelling with Iris from the beginning. She was only 6 weeks young when we had our first short vacation and stayed in a hotel. Iris has been used to it rather fast and (maybe because of it) has always been an easy kid to get along with.

A very special tricycle which seem to go very fast.
Of course you can rent bicycles almost everywhere in Friesland.
In Sneek for instance at the address below.
The bicycle shop is called Twa Tsjillen.
It's located in the town centre, about 5-10 minutes walk from the train station.

Hardly any cars pass through the old center of Sneek. You can find various parking lots along the borders of the city center.
The tourist office has a good brochure called 'Parkeren in Sneek' (parking in Sneek).
You can download this brochure (June 2008), then see page 2 and you'll find a clear, printable map of Sneek with the parking places.

Within town the parking is limited to about 2 hours, and it costs € 1.00 per hour.

Pssst... don't tell... we parked our car for free in front of the local Police headquarters. Safest place in town!

    Sneek by public transportation

by ATLC Written Jul 3, 2008

The trip to Sneek from Amsterdam Central Station is 2.5 to 3 hours by public transportation.
Either via Alkmaar and Afsluitdijk by train and bus
via Amersfoort and Zwolle by train, followed by a bus trip from Heereveen to Sneek.

Probably option 1 (via Alkmaar) is easiest although it does involve 2 bus changes.
Arriving at Sneek train station it is only a short, 10 minute walk, into the town center.

For schedules, prices and a translation of the transportation website, see below.

Hire a small boat or yacht!

I didn't have a boat but I sure hope to hire one next time I am in Friesland!

There are so many canals and beautiful lakes.

It is just the best way to get around in this province. For those who never sailed before: there are plenty of sailing schools.
