KNIL-museum in Bronbeek
In a military home for (now very much aged) Dutch Indies veterans one can visit the museum that brings our former colony very close. Not only weapons, but also clothing, maquettes, maps, musical instruments and many many stories. Peculiar, small and historicaly quiet intresting.
Why nobody mentioned the Mill?
I have seen from the train the shape of the Mill and my curiosity was awaking. I have never seen any mention about it on VT and partially I know why :)
It seems that here you will find the hidden part of Arnhem. I do not care about the function of the building (it is called by the way Erotiek the Mill...) but the building itself is nice looking.
The natural estates way up North
Schaarsbergen, I have / will built a seperat page on this Northern neighborhood offers many beautiful estates within the forestry of the Veluwe. For example Warnsborn, that also offers an exclusive (cure) hotel and cosy small camping. Here one can walk for hours and hours through beautiful natural settings. It's also the best place to go to enjoy the autumn splendour in Arnhem.
Knights in shining armour
I just happened to be in Arnhem when a French stunt outfit put on a magnificent display of medieval jousting.
As in those long ago days the old town square with an ancient church as a back drop was used to host the tournament.

Drive the WWII Operation Market/Garden Route
Start at Joe's Bridge where the XXX British Corps kicked off their offensive towards Niijmegen, Eindhoven and Arnhem. Follow the back roads, stopping at the various monuments, markers and statues along the way. Use "Major and Mrs. Holt's" guide book and map for directions and information. End your trip in Arnhem and visit the Airborne Museum.
Mariëndaal, a secret hidden on Arnhems Westside.
One of the unknown parks of Arnhem is at the Eastern border between the town and it's suburb Oosterbeek. Here is park Mariëndaal which holds the most romantic place in this neighborhood (maybe even the world). If you take the time to go there and walk around and you will find the secret of this park, you will surely agree in my statement. By the way, if you walk along the mansionhouse in this park, be so friendly to come by and ask for Paul Daniëls at the reception. It's my priviledge to work here!!!
Castle and mansiontour in and around Arnhem
In and around Arnhem there are many castles of which four are perfectly preserved. In Arnhem itself is the castle of Zijpendaal, in the same-named park. Just East of the town in the village of Rozendaal (valley of the Roses) the castle and wonderful gardens of Rosendael can be visited. South of Arnhem, in the village of Doornenburg (Burg of thorns, so maybe the castle of the famous fairytale?) the oldest castle will amaze you (900 a.D.). Just West of Arnhem on the landscapefrontier of riverlands and hills is castle Doorwerth (also the Hunting-museum). Around the castles are most of the time beautiful wanderpaths with coloured signs.
If you really want to see...
If you really want to see something special, please visit the so called 'Blauwe Kamer' a pecial zone along the river 'RIJN' on the west of wageningen on a 20 minutes walk, or just take the bus to Rhenen and ask the driver to drop you of.
Down there you can see how nature faught back on civilisation, the river 'dijk' was cut-open and the water floads the land which is wet and saoky. All kinds of different animal and plant life are appearing so go an d find out!
Entrance is free! Please go early in the morning and you will catch a variety in birds!

Going out of town by bike or car, touristic route
I also recommend a visit to the little town Zutphen (33 kms from Arnhem).
It's a beautiful town, big enough for some nice shopping but also old and quaint.
If you do go to Zutphen by car, don't take the motorway.
The route I'm describing below is one which I have taken countless times from my toddler years all through childhood and adolescense. I can just take that route now in my mind and enjoy my memories of it.
From Camping Warnsborn, take the N785 direction Rozendaal and Velp and keep on driving along to De Steeg, Ellecom, Dieren, Brummen, etc. onto the N348 (do NOT go on the motorway A348!).
It's a lovely road, the first part lined with trees and old houses or manors.
If you feel like it, you could turn off at Brummen towards Bronkhorst (you'll cross the IJssel river on a little ferry). Bronkhorst looks like a tiny village but is in fact the smallest town (historically) in The Netherlands.
You could meander back to your route from there.
Another option along that route is a visit to Middachten castle (just outside Arnhem, near De Steeg.

Study the Arts aside the Rhine
The Arnhem branch ArtEZ Institute of the Arts is in a modern building down by the river. I'm not sure how "open" it is normally for the casual visitor, but I was with my friend who worked there for a time. It was between terms, so very quiet and great for photographing. The dance program seems to be based at this campus.
The museum, MMKA Arnhem is short walk up a steep hill.

Sequoia at Hartenstein, Oosterbeek near Arnhem
A rare tree, the sequoia! I remember we took a picture of another specimen of this tree at Oostmalle in Belgium. They're quite uncommon in Europe. This one surprised us because it branches out all the way to the lowest parts of the stem.
Please do not forget the Large...
Please do not forget the Large Arboretum in Wageningen, it is on the Van Uvenweg on top of the so called 'Wageningse Berg'.
OK This is really just an excuse to use the pic but Arnhem does strike me as an arty city. This passageway with its colourful murals links the riverside to the street of Molenkom in the old city.
