    POLARE: (Second Hand) Books

    by pieter_jan_v Updated Mar 9, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

POLARE, housed in the former Post Office, started in 2013 as a combination of the former Dekker and De Slegte book shops.

The interior is completely renewed and upgraded; in other words a book lovers heaven.

There is a small coffee corner at the rear.

2014 update: Well the POLARE giant had a short life. It looks like most shops will return in some local form with a name from the past.

Lensen Tabak: How I Didn't Manage To Get To The Open Air Museum

by johngayton Updated Sep 17, 2013

The purpose of this Netherlands trip was as a top-up tobacco run - the beers, meals and the mini-meet were all ancillary. I'd found this tobacconist the evening before and had decided to pick up my supplies in the morning with the intention of dropping my bag off at the left-luggage in the station before heading out to the Open Air Museum.

As a tobacconists Lenten Tabak is pretty much perfect - full of aromas, a good selection of international brands and very friendly staff. However they didn't seem to stock my particular variety of Gauloises "Tabac a Rouler" but they did offer me another Gauloises blend. It was in a darker pack than my normal one and because I'm kindof fixed to my particular brand (which hardly makes me cough at all) I sadly declined.

I changed plans and instead of heading out to the museum I decided to detour into one of my old regular shops in Amsterdam, Hartman's, who I was sure would stock my variety.

Oh dear! I got to Hartman's and enquired about my tobacco only to be told that it was no longer available in The Netherlands but that the new mix, which is slightly lower in tar, had pretty much the same flavour. I bought one pack to try it out, which turned out fine and so I went back to buy the couple of kilos I needed.

Bit of a bugger really as I could have stuck to my original plan in Arnhem!

Oh well, that's as good an excuse as any to revisit Arnhem and as a minor bonus I did manage to get a new season "Hareng Broodje" from Frens Haringhandel in Amsterdam.

    What to buy: Gauloises tobacco.

What to pay: A lot cheaper than the UK!

A great shop for searching for an hour or two.

Just went you thought you were done, there's another section with more; and there is the first floor too!

    For record hunters:
-6 boxes of Classical music, but also many Israelian albums.
-About the same number of box with pop music, mainly Dutch, but also others
-A surprisingly number of 78 RPM records, no sleeves, but interesting
    -Some other records.

    Business hours:
    Mo: 1PM - 5PM
    Tu-Sa: Noon - 5:30PM
    Su: Closed

There is a Nijmegen branch at Houtstraat 35 - 6511 JK Nijmegen

What to buy: Records (many 2nd hand albums), maps (amazing ones), book in all sorts; too much to mention.

What to pay: It's high on my favorite list, so it cannot be that much.
