I did not feel safe being later on the streets and I was advised to stay away from the periphery and Sonsbeek too after the sunset. That area around the Mill is not looking very friendly... And even in the centre the things are changing during the night...
I took a taxi last night to my campsite and the cab driver played a nasty trick on me. She deliberately handed me my change in the dark so that I couldn't see that she was short-changing me. She gave me a series of 20 cent coins instead of 1 euro coins! When I got into the light, she was already speeding off. I know she saw me chasing the cab. So... no matter how friendly the driver is (she seemed a nice middle aged lady), always insist that the lights are on when they give you change! This lady cheated me out of 6 euro.
Though one of the most modern in it's kind, the Rijnstate hospital is for tourists of course not a place to really end up in. Before Arnhem had four different hospitals located around town. Now the huge Rijnstate hospital offers all facilities necessary for the town, together with a policlinic in the Southern part (South of the Rhine).
The only place that looks intresting, but ... you don't want to end up here. Arnhem has one out of four architectural specific buildings that are in use as a prison. Other towns that have them are Scheveningen, Tilburg and I believe Haarlem. This prison is a large round building with around it a high circular wall. Inside the cells are around a centre court so one has a global view on all doors. The dome of the prison is a significant structure on Arnhem's West-side.
Be aware of the Telecom sharks (or whatever they want to sell to you).
Ask for a brochure and say you will study it and think it over first.

The exhibits walls in this zoo are quite low sometimes so that your kids can easily climb on them.... It´s not healthy to fall into any of the exhibits I think, especially this guy has big teeth!!!!
