Mansions and houses ... homes of the rich
Beek Ubbergen was and is, because of it's natural splendour and beautiful environment, became quite attractive for richer town people in Nijmegen to start building their large homes and mansions in these surroundings in the last two centuries. Therefore driving around these neighbourhood will result in some occasional ooh's and aah's when a beautiful mansion is seen against the hills, enjoying wide views over the Ooij-polder and riverlands. Large gardens that often are carefully maintained, also add to the surroundings that Beek Ubbergen is in.
Falling on the march to Nijmegen
Nijmegen bridge played a key role in the Market Garden operations to shorten the second war and finish it before Cristmas and send the boys home. Sadly the daring operation became a disaster ending in the dramatic battle of Arnhem, where the allied forces had to admit that they went "a bridge to far". Near Nijmegen parachutists of the American Airborn division were dropped East of the town itself (fields in between the German "Reichswald" and Dutch "Groesbeek"-area. On the march to Nijmegen they met resistance hidden in the hills near Beek-Ubbergen and many fell on the march towards the "Waal"-bridge in Nijmegen (that eventually miraculously was saved). In Beek stands a monument remembering the ones that gave their lives for our freedom. Let us not forget !
