In our town we have a fair on the first thursday after All Soul's Day. in the 1800's Druten was very isolated in the Netherlands lying between rivers Maas and Waal it was difficult to travel and trade cows, horses etc.
Therefor Druten had (by King William I desicion) the right to organize three markets per year. One in the second half of april, one on the first thursday of september and of course this one.
Nowadays there are enough possiblities to buy and sell cattle. So these markets are long gone now, except for "Leste Mert". It s a long tradition and will be kept for the 188th time I believe in november.
Today you can buy all kinds of stuff besides cattle and it's a great excuse to get drunk again.
