The famous horse (and pony) market of Elst has become so famous that the authorities here wanted to give it a more permanent presence in town. In the square in from of the church one finds a statue that shows the love towards this yearly event and that also shows the traditional way of selling "clapping hands".
Already in 10th century there is proove of Elst being an important tradingplace for cattle in general and horses especial. The market excisted already then. Since 1883 every year the horse and ponymarket draws hundred's of farmers from a wide range to Elst. Every first Monday in September this tradition is returning to Elst and visiting it is reliving the past in many facets.
