A very Big and beautiful Bell in the Arnhem Church

by Waalewiener Written Jan 8, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: When you see a Bell this size you just wonder how on earth did they bring these kind of Bell's way up there in the Tower of the Church I don't think they had the use of that nice elevator in the old days.
They probably used heavy ropes and Pulleys ,like they do on Ships .

Rich history from Batavians to knight to barons.

    Fondest memory: The variety:
Riverland the "Betuwe" with their wide flat open fields, ackres and fruittreegardens and the dikes protecting us from the mighty rivers.
Forests and heatherfields on the "Veluwe"-hills, with natural beauty and the silence on the sandplates.
The mixed landscape of the "Achterhoek" with it's agriculture, cosy villages and hidden castles.

Favorite thing: Located in the Provincie Gelderland.
In historical times BETUWE was known as Insula Batavorum or Island of the Batavians, the Germanic tribe from which the modern name is derived,
The Betuwe is situated between the Waal and Rhine Rivers, surrounding the beautiful Linge. The Rhine enters the Netherlands at Lobith and splits into the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine) and the Waal.
The Betuwe region is divided into 11 municipalities:
    Arnhem (Southern part)
    Buren
    Culemborg
    Geldermalsen
    Lingewaal
    Lingewaard
    Neder-Betuwe
    Neerijnen

    SPIJK - LINGEWAAL

by LoriPori Updated Jul 1, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Wednesday May 28, 2008
SPIJK is a village in the Province of Gelderland. Spijk, along with Asperen and Heukelum make up the municipality of Lingewaal and lies about 3 km northeast of Gorinchem.
Spijk was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1855 when it became part of Heukelum. At that time Spijk was still part of the province of South Holland.
We went to the area where the two countries of the Netherlands and Germany come together. You could actually step on one spot and you were in the Netherlands and just one more step you were now in Germany.
In the picture here, is a road sign pointing to Spijk / Lobith which is in the Netherlands and the other is pointing to Huthum / Emmerich which is in Germany. As you drive along the winding road, you actually go in and out of the two countries.

left - the Netherlands / right - Germany
