Kasteel Doorwerth Transportation

  • Parking tip

There is ample parking around the castle walls. I parked the Volvo in between two other cars, despite the comment of my friend that the space was too tight. NOT! Which gave us both a laugh :-)The secret is, a wise person once said: always park backwards, however small the space is to turn your car. Because you'll need more space if you park forward...

This map gives you some idea how castle Doorwerth is located. It is in the left bottom corner of this map, in a bend of the river Rine. This is the earliest image of the castle Doorwerth and is part of a map of the Veluwe. It has been drawn by Christiaan sGrooten in 1570.

    Inside of Castle Doorwerth

This is a picture of the inside of the castle. I found the interior very disappointing, there was only a little bit of furniture. The main part of the castle was made into a museum. Inside the castle there is a museum of local art and the Dutch Hunting Museum. I didn't like either of the exhibitions very much. The atmosphere of being in a castle was totally gone due to these exhibitions.

On the roof you can see a British supply parachute. You can see this picture together with a lot more picture of the castle during the Second World War in one of the rooms of the castle. (picture...

  • The castle after the war

This is what is left of the castle after the Battle of Arnhem in World War II. De occupation of the enemy made this castle a target for the Allied troops. The south wing was blown away by the Germans. (picture D.Renes, 23 March 1946). It is amazing to see how this castle has been rebuilt after the war. When I look at the castle as it is now, it is...

  • From the 13th century

The building of the castle started in the 13th century. It was spared in the 17th century by the French because the Danish owner had obtained a sauve-garde, meaning that the French were not allowed to attach or demolish the castle. During the Second World War however, the castle was severely damaged but it is now restored to perfection. The...

  • Visiting Doorwerth Castle

To enter the castle you have to go over a drawbridge to get inside the castles walls. We were the only ones on the inner court; it looked quite romantic with the autumn sun shining on the castle. The castle dates back to the 13th century.
