A very strange custom can be found at times along the IJssel river and some other rivers in the Netherlands (also to be seen as a trend in other streams all over the world!): fishing for beer!
To have a sufficient supply of cooled beer (and other beverages) people often store their bottles in the river, to use the currents and the lower water temperatures to cool their drinks in height of summer. However, passing ships creating strong waves and (in other areas) strong currents in the water can cause a problem - the drinks are washed away!
Fast action for recovery of these essential supplies is needed: all forces need to be alerted to bring the lost treasures back to the shoreline! We call this "beer-fishing".
