Nijmegen Things to Do

  • Market Square

The triangular Grote Markt lies in the center of old Nijmegen. In the square there is a statue of Mariken van Nieumeghen, the chief character in the 15th century mystery play of that name. According to legend Mariken, having entered into a league with the Devil, was fettered in iron rings but that when her period of penitence was over the rings...

Nijmegen Restaurants

  • De Muis

We were here with family members aunt M. and Frank on the final day of the Four Days' Marches, 18 July 2008. Also present were Frank's walking mate and her family. I borrowed this picture from the website of the restaurant. Some nice cool beer - König Ludwig Weissbier, a Bavarian brand apparently - mineral water, and Schnitzel. Jennie and I paid...

  • The old city wall tower

The restaurant is housed in the Belvédère, a former Walltower called the Hoendertoren. As such there are huge basement cellars used as gun powder rooms. The present name of the tower originates from the wonderful river view. After the Spanish wars the buiding got a more recreative character, first for the towns magistrates, but in the course of...

  • Best value for money

This Italian/Greek restaurant was an extremely pleasant surprise, although we could have known since their motto is "good, cosy and cheap". How many restaurants actually live up to such a motto??The prices are VERY reasonable (I would indeed almost say cheap) and the food is VERY good (and a lot!).Waiters were fast and friendly. Nice atmosphere.I...

Nijmegen Nightlife

  • Best nightlife spots - NO mainstream...

Doornroosje is a bit out of town (10min by car), they do many festivals and invite many well known artists/dj's. Great techno, house, dance stuff, but also rock. Merleyn (belongs to Doornroosje) is in the city and often offers techno, house, dance, indie, club, electro, you name it! Check out their website where you can find upcoming events for...

A chaotically-run, but great local music bar. Rob & Willy are ex-hippies who run the bar like a private theater. Open until 4 am at the weekends. Anything you want.

  • Good Beer, Meatballs and Quiz Nights

This is a proper Dutch "Brown Bar" type place with no frills just decent beer, friendly locals, knowledgeable barman, good simple bar food and the regular Tuesday night quiz.I only had two evenings here in Nijmegen but on both occasions de Nieuwe Maan seemed be the place where it was all happening. From the beer side they usually have about 6 beers...

  • Even Though It's On A Hill!

Despite Nijmegens hilltop location cycling is still the most popular means of local transport and in fact the city centre is closed off to motor vehicles apart from buses and deliveries. The hills themselves aren't too steep and the roads, and the bridge, all have cycle lanes and the surrounding area is pretty level. I had intended to hire a bike...

It is prepared by making like French Fries (or Freedom Fries), after the potatoes are cut, you then place them in boiling oil, partially...

Nijmegen Warnings and Dangers

  • Parkingtroubles (even with little money)

Parking has become a tricky business after the city of Nijmegen decided to make new parkingmachines. Now you can only pay with pincard, creditcard or the so called 'chipknip'. Coins are no longer a solution, something that leads to many disappointments by people that are unaware of this change. Before you know it you have to park your car far...

  • The river Waal has overflowed its banks...

This happens occasionally, but there's never much damage done (as long as you don't park your car or bike too close to the water's edge...). Instead people flock to the river and the restaurants and have a good time watching the water flow by.

  • War cemetary near Nijmegen

We went to this war cemetary to visit an uncle residing there. The Dutch keep it in immaculate condition - we were amazed. It is amazing to see all the graves row on row. It truly reminds me of the poem written by the Canadian doctor John McCrae in 1915. (No poppies now, but lots of other flowers)."In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the...

  • Mermaid on the Waal?

No, its a woman on a wall, not a mermaid on a waal, silly! The river Waal is mysteriously deceptive, with wonderful albeit random pieces of art and decorum along amidst the factory industry of the other sections. Nijmegen is the best place to see some of this. Sit at one of the cafes along the river, or even eat aboard one of the boats there! I...
