Being there in Rheden early in the morning I have found nice to walk around. In fact I use to take an earlier train just to spend few minutes in the city, impressed by the cleanliness of the street and purity of the air.The special colours and the morning haze were making everything to look different than in the daylight...more
By far, the number one attraction in Rheden is the "Posbank" area. These hills are covered by heather and the relief is unique for Dutch landscape. Sandy hills were cut out by water-erosion (still visible when you walk along the steep paths up and down the hills). The surrounding forest kept away because of the moving from the sand, covering...more
A few minutes drive from Rheden, brings you in "De Steeg". This village holds the castle of Middachten, where an aristocratic family still lives. The gardens surrounding the castle are herbal and kep in great shape. Some parts of the castle is opened for public, but the greatest event here is at Christmas (see local customs-tip).more

On top of the highest hill in the Posbank-area is a teahouse. The first restaurant and teahouse that was here burned to the ground a few years ago. Then political debats were doubting weather to built a new one here, in this natural reserve and always attracting masses of people. After a few years one desides to built a special buildingm housing only a teahouse. It is built into the ground and has a roof that is camouflaged by grass and heather.
Favorite Dish: On warm days outside the teahouse there are several iceselling vans, which will be a wonderful refreshment after a long walk over the hills and through the heatherfields.
The two ways ticket from Arnhem to Rheden and back is costing about 3.80 Euro. You will have at least one "stoptrain" from Arnhem to Rheden at every hour. The trains are looking nice and it seems that even at the rush hour they are not so crowded.Be sure that the train is stopping in Rheden. The Intercities are not!Do not forget that the only way...more
The Posbank (Veluwezoom National Reserve) is an ideal place to walk. This way you will really enjoy this natural setting and pass beautiful trees, bushes and plants. Sometimes a deer crosses your path or a rabbit speeds away over the heatherfields. Visiting friends are always treated to a ride to and walk over the Posbank.more
Though Reden is situated on the railway linking Arnhem with Deventer and Zwolle, the easiest way to get there is over the highway from Arnhem to Dieren (direction Zutphen) and get of at exit Rheden. From her it's a few minutes to the Posbank. For the castle of Middachten one better gets of at exit De Steeg and before you enter the village, turn...more
I have forgotten that Rheden is still in Holland and this is why I was surprised to see in the morning that everybody is using the bicycle to go to the work or school or even the kindergarten... If you do not believe it take a look to my photos. The youngest bicyclist was not older than three years.more
The family that inhabites the castle for centuries, always does something special with Christmas. All the rooms are decorated in specific styles and colours and in the middlepoint is the Christmas-tree. Outside on the patio with the former stables and personel-quarters, few little Christmas-markets are installed and all kinds of decorative little...more

The nature at the Posbank is one of the most fragile ecosystems in The Netherlands. As for the "bad furtility" of the sandy soil the plants here are very touchy to man's handling. Therefor one should stick to the paths and not roam around the hills and heatherfields. On the fields sheeps, Przwalski and Iceland horses graze, as well as Scottish...more
Miscellaneous: The Posbank-hills on beautiful days is an ideal place to have a picknick. So, pack your basket and fill it with sandwiches and sweets. Fill the thermosbottle with tea and role up the picknick-plate.
Across the river IJssel lays a part of Rheden that is very different from the hills and forests up hill (Posbank). This is paradise for watersportlovers, like surfers, sailors, swimmers etc. etc. etc. In the riverbed of the IJssel there is a lot of sandwinning going on with as result enormous riverlakes that invite many to come in summertime for a dip or any other waterfun. The leftover-sand is thereby perfect for beaches and in the river there are several places good for little sailboat-harbours. The area is called "Rhederlaag" which means literally "Lower part of Rheden"
Around the Posbank (Rheden itself, but also Rozendaal, Beekbergen and Arnhem) there are maneges where one can rent horses to have the ride of a lifetime. There are several horseriding paths through the forests and the valleys of the Posbank. Especially in August and September, when the heather turns everything purple, this is an unforgetable experience.
A beautiful and for Dutch standards, quiet adventurous drive enters the Posbank from Rozendaal (see seperate page). Here one drives through a dense mixed forest and goes surprisingly up and down (it's nicknamed Gelderland's little Switzerland). One of the few hairpincurves in The Netherlands is along the way in a steep descent to the...more
