Thanks to vtveen I was able to update this info many years later.
There is a tourist information point now in the basement of the old town hall. More info at the website below.
July 2004: As in many cities in The Netherlands, the VVV (Tourist offices) have closed and museums or town councils have taken over this responsibility. So when you see a sign pointing you towards the VVV, you'll be going wrong.
Information about accomodation and such can be had at the Maarten van Rossem museum. It's hardly adequate although the gentleman there was quite knowledgeable.
