The Nikolai Church is on the official top 100 list of Dutch momuments .The oldest part of this Church dates from 1225 and it was first dedicated to Maria. After 1408 the Church was dedicated to St Nikolai ,the patron of traveling Merchants and Sailors.

This beautiful medieval Council Hall was restored in 1911 and in 1984 The beautiful facade is masonry and red brick of sandstone . Between the windows is a statue of Lady Justice ,it is almost real scale.
Lady Justice is not blindfolded and the Justice done in that evil period was questionable. On the sandstone band it says
in Latin ,''Honour is God's all, United we stand, Divided we fall." Where one cannot respect or maintain Justice, Wher one cannot find Honesty. Devoutness and Loalty an Empire is on weak grounds."
Finally above the little archway in the front facade one can see a key-stone in the shape of a woman's head, and the City's Coat of Arms.
If you don't expect Appingedam to be Amsterdam,or even Leeuwarden, you will enjoy your stay. Its a small town in the very northern part of the Netherlands. Its tranquil canal sides, and picturesque streets make for a very mellow experience. Didn't see (or hear )any other Americans .Granted we were there on a Sunday and things slow down a bit then. So I guess my "Must See Activity" would be just a stroll thru this lovely town.,soaking up the atmosphere of what to an Appalachian American is a truly charming town.
This is one of those typical Dutch bridges ,there are thousands and thousands of briges over the Dutch canals ,and they look different all the time.
This one is a real beautty.
This is a very nice canal scenery ,a little harbour ,a sailboat , it looks very peaceful in this area.
Het Damsterdiep, this is the canal that runs through the Town of Appingedam ,beautiful homes and nice Dutch style ships docked in this canal.
