  • Appingedam

If you don't expect Appingedam to be Amsterdam,or even Leeuwarden, you will enjoy your stay. Its a small town in the very northern part of the Netherlands. Its tranquil canal sides, and picturesque streets make for a very mellow experience. Didn't see (or hear )any other Americans .Granted we were there on a Sunday and things slow down a bit then. So...

Appingedam Transportation

  • Travelling with (young) kids.

Are you nervous about taking your baby or child on a plane trip? You aren't alone, most parents are nervous about it. We have moved with Iris to Callantsoog by car this holiday and drove some distances by car on when we were there and we learned a few things that hopefully will help you. General: Bring books, old favourite toys and new surprise...

Appingedam Local Customs

  • Voltage, frequency and plug ins.

Maybe it sounds a bit weird, but as an experience traveler I know that you every now and then need this kind of information in advance: electricity in the Netherlands is 230 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. If you travel to the Netherlands with a device that does not accept 230 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter.There...

  • Grolsch -> Just like home sweet home!...

Let’s make no secret of it. We both like a nice cold glass of beer. Being at our travel pace is always a challenge to find a beer we like, which reflects our taste of having a beer. At Callantsoog (and this probably counts for our entire home country) it was rather difficult. We found out that there are a few local beers, only known in the...

Appingedam Warnings and Dangers

  • Reading a map.

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, the catchy title of the 1992 bestseller by John Gray, succinctly expresses an ancient dilemma. What--if anything--do men's and women's brains do differently? The general statement that men and women respond and behave differently under the same circumstances is true; For example, from the crib, male babies...

  • Do drink enough.

For years, we have all been told of the importance of water. The general guideline has been to drink 2 litre of water each day. For a person who is not living an active lifestyle this may be enough, but if you are physically active, you need more water than that. That is especially true if you are hiking in the Callantsoog area due to the fact the...

In case you want to bring any electrical appliances with you, here is the system The Netherlands uses: 230 volts and 50 Hz. It is a round pin attachment plug (see picture)An adapter will allow you to plug an appliance designed for one type of outlet into another type of outlet. Despite the fact that more than a dozen different types of plugs are...

  • Blue Heron

One of my favourite birds : the Blue Heron. I just love seeing them, they are so prehistoric in a way. It's very common to see a blue heron fishing on the side of the canal, waiting for hours patiently to catch a fish. Since I was a little kid I loved watching them and I can remember sitting on the other side of the canal watching them staring into...

Appingedam Favorites

  • by Xefian Written Oct 4, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: We Visited Appingedam on a Sunday and Monday. This town shuts down on Sundays. I'm not complaining ,the streets were close to deserted, allowing for photo ops aplenty.
There were a couple restaurants open ,and a very active club scene (at the few that were open).

Fondest memory: Pink Floyd Echoes drifting across the water from a 300 year old canal house. Turn the corner ,up a block ...oh whats that from near the town square ? ...Its loud ,its voices...closer...ahh its the Mens choir singing (inEnglish) 'Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of Rum'
    Such is the Netherlands.
