Bourtange has a couple nice restaurants as well as a "fast food joint" ...we had dinner at s'landhuis located right on the main square, or should I say Circle, of the town ...there is a bit of a German twist to the menu . I had a Bourtange Schnitzel myself and was quite satisfied...the bill came to 26 Euro for the two of us including a couple of Amstels each ...During the day this becomes one of the two busiest places in town ,with tourists relaxing either in the outdoor cafe area ,or in the atmospheric inside...by evening its fairly quiet with locals enjoying a meal or a bier or two ...recommended

In the times that Bourtange was a military fortress, this place used to be the administrative staff of the detachment that was placed here. The place where purchases were done and where the "soldij" (miliraty salary) was paid. It was also a hostell for officers on travels from one station to another. It also was the officers mess and had a good equipped kitchen. Now-a-days it is a restaurant and party room up to 150 persons. One can imagine that a marriage party here has some (extra) charmes.

On the "Markt" (the central square) is a wonderful cosy typical Dutch brown cafe. Here you can drink a nice coffee, tea, beer or beverage and enjoy simple snacks, pies or a small lunch. Outside there is a small terrace to enjoy (weather permiting) the shade under the old trees.
Favorite Dish: Coffee "verkeerd" (half milk half coffee, or sometimes called "Cafe Latte") with Dutch apple pie with whipped creme.
