Beeches reaching for the clear blue sky.
Since I was a kid I have loved walking the fields and this walk was very much similar to those walks. Well almost, a dog would have made it complete :-)

Coming out of the woods (literally) we had this view over agricultural land before walking towards other woods.
Very pleasant walk and decent walking paths.

Appelbergen is a wood between Haren and Glimmen (translated that would be Hairs & Shine).
Some 60 years aga 16 people were shot and buried here and the community now has decided on excarvating them and give the people a proper burial.
One can walk freely through this beautiful area of wood, swamp and agricultural land.

This is a walk from the north of the Netherlands to the south, or the other way round.
One can also do some laps of the walk, most starting points are close to public transport.
In all one can walk 490 kilometres.
Equipment: Be prepared for rain and wear good walking shoes.

Favorite thing: some 4 km from Maastricht.
If you succeed in walking the whole path you will have seen the most different landscapes and you will have a good idea of what most of the Netherlands are like.
Empty fields, sleepy villages, friendly people, and the more south one comes, the more spontaneous people will seem to be.

Favorite thing: to Pieterburen.
Pieterburen is a nice village, seal centre, vicar's garden, restaurants, shops and a great countryside!
Pieterburen is close to the sea and if you cannot get enough of walking you can keep on walking till you reach the Waddensea.

Favorite thing: Part of a walk way from north to south of the Netherlands goes through this area.
It is called the 'Pieterpad' because it goes from Pieterburen, a small village way up north, to the Pietersberg, an area close to Maastricht.
This is a walk of about 490 kilometres, one can walk it in about 27 days, each day some 15, 20 km.
