Favorite thing: My favorite thing is going downhill, like Tom did here. (Gonnie)
But Toms favorite thing is climbing it. Preferably on his bicycle.
And after this we both like to drink a beer on one of the many terasses on the foot of the Cauberg.
Favorite thing: The Cauberg was the stage for the worst buscrash in dutch history. At 29 september 1954 19 people were killed when a bus came down the Cauberg out of control and crashed into a monument of marlstone at the Grendelplein. The monument was made by Cuypers and was to remember the 50th anniversary of the rejoining of Limburg with the Netherlands 1839-1889. It was torn down on the night of the accident.
Workers of a belgian mining company were on a day out with wifes and children. In total 202 passengers in several busses. One bus
had problems with its brakes when coming down the Cauberg. The drivers tried to avoid a crash, but at the Gemeentegrot he hit Armand Vijgen, a guide who wanted to cross the road. After that the bus smashed into a huge monument of marlstone at the bottom of the Cauberg. Leaving 19 people dead (aged between 2 and 72), and several injured. The guide Armand Vijgen was the only casualty from Valkenburg.
Today there is a little monument with the names and ages of the victims at the entrance of the castle.
