Sittard is a major town of Limburg and there are plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes.
There aren't too many touristy type attractions around here but there are a number of interesting historical buildings including the Cafe "de Gats" which dates from 1530 AD.
Because it located in the narrowest part of Limburg and close to the border you can easily make quick trips to nearby Belgium and Germany.

I did not have time to find out the meaning of each statue in Sittard. But here is another interesting one you might want to gaze at while at the Market Place. For more information go to the VVV (tourist office)

The newer of the three large churches in the center of Sittard, Onze Lieve Vrouw or Our Lady (literally Our beloved Lady) was a pilgimage sight for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. This church was built in the late 1800s.
When in 1854 Father Jules Chevalier was thinking of founding a society of men whose mission it would be to cure the evils of that time by leading people to the Heart of Christ as the healing source of life, he asked Our Lady for help. Having experienced her powerful intercession several times he felt that, out of gratitude, his society should honour her in a special way.
Eventually he invoked her with the title "Our Lady of the Sacred Heart" and the devotion to Mary with that title spread rapidly in all continents. A confraternity with that name was founded and reached 18 million members in 1891. The Congregation of Sisters founded by Father Chevalier are called "the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart".

St.Michielskerk is a baroque structure built 1681 - 84. It was preceded by as reformed church disguised as a brewery from 1635 but that structure was destroyed by fire. It is baroque style and quite impressive. It appears to be open Saturdays from 2 - 4.

From 1299 on there was a church on this site but at the end of the 14th century it was decided to build a Gothic style church. As is often the case this church was built in various sections over time with the tower being added in the 16th century and standing 80 meters high. In 1857 a fire destroyed the top of the tower but it was redesigned by famous architecht P.J.H.Cuypers and rebuilt from 1859 to 1861. The current spire was added in 1875.

Sittard has interesting architechture to offer. On the Market (Markt) we found this interesting "half timber" (fachwerk in German) house that is being restored.

While there looked to be several good Cafe's in Sittard, especially at or on the Market Place we wanted to maximize our time to walk around. Thus, we had a good meal at my favorite "quick food place" -- Bufkes! I love the chicken filet 'sandwich' on wheat bread!
Favorite Dish: I like the Chicken Filet Sandwich (broodje Kipfilet ) but their Grillworst (sausage) is good and they serve ribs, chicken, good soup, and many other dishes -- both warm and cold. It is mostly take out but the location in the shopping street in Sittard had four stools while one near us at the 1992 'square' or plein in Wyck has several tables.

I stumbled on this place by accident when another place where we tried to eat was already booked. We've eaten here twice now and it's fast becoming one of my favorite restaurants. The food presentation is beautiful, and you get gigantic portions. The food is also delicious. The ice cream sundaes are works of art.
Favorite Dish: The tilapia is a wonderful thing. It's very mild and is topped with a delicious sauce. You get a huge salad with it (the salad alone is big enough to be a meal) and a side of mixed fried potato dishes: fries, hashbrowns, croquettes, and a few onion rings for good measure. I've had the pasta too and it's fabulous.

Pretzels? Whats that!? See the picture.
The menu changes regularly. Take your time to read the card, its humoristic. You can choose from items out of several countries. European and exotic meals.
Its always delicious.
Favorite Dish: Start with the plate of Tapas. Little bites, but when the plate is empty, your hunger sure will be decreased.
For dessert, i advise the Koffie Pretzels. A cup of coffee and a bit of ice. So you will not feel stuffed.

Favorite thing: When strolling around Sittard you'll find many little statues. I found this little irreverant little boy on the main shopping street (pedestrian zone).
