Getting Around Provincie Limburg

In the south of Limburg, between Aachen and Maastricht and Schin op Geul and Kerkrade, two unprofitable railway lines were closed and are now exploited by the Z.L.S.M * a voluntary organisation that used historical material for the connection between these places, like 5 steamlocomotives, several old diesellocomotives and a few German railbusses. Centre of activity is the old station of Simpelveld.

Unfortunately when I was there the season hadn't started yet. I did get to see one of the steamengines which was taken for a test ride. An impressive sight and sound!

Flight options towards the Limburg area are numerous, let's review the best possibilities:

Maastricht-Airport: The only airport in the province with passenger flights. Besides a number of cargo flights, this is a Ryanair hub with several flights throughout Europe including London/Dublin and Milan.
Getting there: It's right next to the A2 motorway and easy to reach. Local busses leave 2x Hourly to Sittard and Maastricht where you can connect to the trains.
Express busses for Germany leave several times a day to: Aachen-Cologne, Monchengladbach and Dusseldorf.

Weeze Airport: Just accross the border in the far north of the province is this large Ryanair hub with flights all over Europe, a good low-cost option but not easy to reach with Public Transport.

Eindhoven Airport: Wizzair, Transavia and Ryanair serve a number of destinations all over Europe. Local busses leave 3x Hour to Eindhoven train station from where easy and quick connections through every city in Limburg are available.

Schiphol Airport: It's a 2.5hr trainride, but easy to reach and offering a vast number of options.

If you own a car the airports of Cologne/Brussels and Dusseldorf are within a 1hr drive of the province. Cologne is a good option for low-cost flights with Germanwings. Dusseldorf and Brussels are quick alternatives to Schiphol Airport with decent connections throughout the world.
