This memorial bears a photo of Joe Mann and the words “On 19 September 1944, Joe E Mann an American soldier sacrificed his young life at this spot to save the lives of his comrades”
There was heavy fighting at the bridge and Private Mann was so badly wounded that both arms were bandaged and tied to his sides. He saw a German grenade land among the men he was with. Unable to free his arms, Mann fell on the grenade, saving the others around him. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The memorial was unveiled by Joe’s sister, Irene Bennett-Mann in 1984.
This bridge was the scene of some heavy fighting during "Operation Market Garden". Taking the bridge over the canal here was not one of the original tasks given to the 101st Airborne. General Maxwell Taylor, thinking that it would be wise to have an alternative route should the Son bridge be blown, sent H Company of the 502nd PIR to take it on 17th September 1944.
Unfortunately, elements of the German 15th Army were in the area and the action developed into a major and bloody confrontation involving over 1,000 German troops, American paratroopers and British armoured cars. Although the bridge at Son was blown up, the fighting here was too intense for the bridge to be used as an alternative route.

You will find restaurant prices quite expensive all over Netherlands. So, my best advise to you all good travellers is to buy something from the store, cook and have great dinner at home. It will be alot more fun than going out and spending the huge amount of money..
Favorite Dish: I had mashed potatoes with endives and spek twice, so this has to be top of the line ;-)
Do whatever your heart desires!!!
A pleasant cafe to sit outside in Summer. This was our favourite cafe in Best as it has Grimbergen beer on tap & no awful pulsating backgound music.
The live bands were usually ok.
Dress Code: It's the Netherlands - wear what you want or don't want :-)
When you have a bike, then you can do just about anything in Netherlands. It is the greatest way to see this beautiful land and reach the places that you need to visit.
Take your time and enjoy the nature!!
A wander around the museum is like taking a step back in time. Many of the exhibits are housed in old aerodrome/military buildings & the overgrown setting certainally adds to the atmosphere.
The main theme covered at the museum is the liberation of the Southern Netherlands in WWII which was explained very well.
Directions to the museum (bus or car) are illustrated on the museum website.

A man made lake with small beaches.
Various activities are available - swimming, cycling, skating, mini golf & a water ski centre http://www.waterski-cable.nl/.
If you don't want to venture into the park - just have a coffee or beer at the cafe in the car park. Take a seat on the verandah which overlooks the lake & catch the sunset.
We often used to take a cycle ride from Best & stop off for a drink at the cafe.
There is also a childrens activity centre next to the cafe, Check out
