Favorite thing: There was a war ,the Dutch & Belgians were at war against the Spaniards it lasted 80 years ,and some where during that time the war was suspended for 12 years, it was here in Breda at the Spanjaardgat where the Dutch were supposed to be liberated from the Spaniards , many stories about this event .I wonder what really happened there.
The war started in 1568 and ended in 1648.

Favorite thing: At this place Holland was liberated from the Spanish about 400 years ago!
Het "Spaanjaarsgat" refers to the freedom war against the Spains from 1568 till 1648.

The story goes that Breda was liberated from Spaniards right here.
On the historic Shrove- Tuesday in 1590 when the Spaniards where celebrating the occupation, Adriaan van Bergen sail with his old peat boat through the waters of Breda.
By order of Adriaan his soldiers emerged from under their load of peat and overcame the celebrating Spaniards. Breda fell into Dutch hands.
this story strongly reminds of the Trojan Horse in which Greek soldiers hid to enter troy and succeeded in surprising the in invincible Trojans.
