The south of the Netherlands is known for its carnival celebrations. Every year, 40 days before Easter, the provinces of Limburg and Noord Brabant have 4 days of carnival celebrations. The tradition is catholic and so are people that live in these provinces (well, at least it used to be this way). Some say that especially in the Noord Brabant the carnival has been celebrated since the medieval times.
The story of the carnival is the same every year, there is a parade, parties everywhere, specially decorated bars and of course the Prince of the carnival and his council of eleven (Raad van Elf). Some suggest that 11 is an evil number because it exceeds the number 10 (commandments) some say that 11 is fools number. The day when the Prince meets the Raad van Elf for the first time, before the carnival, is November 11.
This is year (2005) 94 different teams marched through the city, the last in the long row was the carriage of the Prince Carnival. One of the traditions is, of course, throwing confetti. If you happened to watch the parade and to stand very close to the procession be ready to find the little white dots even in your underwear.

Taptoe is a military music festival that used to be held in Breda every last week of August. In the year of 2004 it was the last time when Taptoe occurred in Breda. It was the 50th time the Dutch and other military orchestras marched playing different musical instruments, from drums to back pipe. And it was the last time they marched through the streets of Breda. Starting 2005 the event is moving to the capital of the province Noord Brabant – Den Bosch (‘s Hertogenbosch). If you have a chance to see it don’t miss it. For more information you can always check the official Website

Evry year (usualy in May), since 1970, there is a jazz festival taking place in Breda. Jazz bands from all over the world are coming to the city to play the music. Some of these bands are very famous in their countries and even in the world. Jazz has many different styles and most of them can be heard during the festival. Podiums are placed all over the city and most of the performaces are free, unless there are some special ones that you have to pay for.
This year we had a great VT meeting and I think about making it a tradition. So, make sure you can come to Breda next year!
