This picture is of the BEYERD which was a guest house for older men. This 13th century house was rebuilt in 1643 and renovated in 1934, and is now a center for art.
The original site of the Breda hospital, it consists of two parts, the actual hospital where the old and sick were taken care of and the Beyerd, where travellers found shelter. In the 16th century it served as a plague house. Since the plague was a very contagious disease for which there was no known cure, people had to be isolated there. Until 1954 it was an old man's retirement home, as the statues above the entrance illustrates two old men leaning on a cane.

Breda's prison is, in my opinion, the most beautiful bulding in the city. It's dom can be seen from far away, and the main gate is very impressive. Looks like not always it served as a prison, but maybe I'm wrong. For sure it was built a few centuries ago.

I love to walk in those woods called "Mastbos"
Mastbos (570 ha) is one of the oldest pine forests of the Netherlands. Count Henry III of Nassau, orded to build the forest in the sixteenth century.
It takes its name from the many pine trees that used to "mast trees" were mentioned.
This venerable forest has over the centuries including wood supplied for the construction of the Castle of Breda and the Spanish fleet.
Now it is a special walking with ancient trees, impressive avenues and beautiful vistas.

The city heart of Breda is "De Grote Markt".
Next to the Great Church you will find this place where you can have a drink or dinner in one of the many pubs and restaurants here.
On Tuesday and Friday mornings you will find a very lively market here where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, books, clothes and a lot more.
If you are into shopping this is a great place to start because all the surrounding streets are shopping streets.

Next to every old tombs of members of the Royal Family you will find a very old organ inside the Great Church of Breda.
It was build in 1534 and went to some rough periods like in 1566 when they saved the organs pipes in city hall because of the mutulation of statues all over The Netherlands.

Between the station and the centre of Breda, you can find the Valkenbergpark. It's a lovely place for walking. There's a fountain and a glass house for a cup of tea.
The park is next to the Castle of Breda and was initially the garden of the castle. There is still a lovely iron fence with gates around the park. Valkenberg means mount of falcons. Once, it was the place where the owner of the castle held his falcons.

The Grote Markt is a nice square in the centre of Breda full of bars and restaurants. As the square is car free, it is fun to spend some time on a terrace drinking an 'Orangeboom' beer and enjoying the lovely view of the Big Church and people passing by.

This little statue is hidden in a small square somewhere in the back of the Grote Markt. I remember passing a passage somewhere near the old court house to get to it.
The statue represents a turfschipper (peat shipper) by the name of Adriaan van Bergen. He helped to conquer Breda on 4 March 1590 by hidding 72 soldiers in his peat ship when entering Breda.
