Cultural Tips: De Fabriek
It is an organisation of artists for artists location:BAARSSTRAAT 38 5615 RG EINDHOVEN NL TEL 31(0)40 2551530 FAX 31(0)40 2526336 fabriek@iaehv.nl General Information De Fabriek not only has to follow developments in art but above all has to make them happen. These developments may have to do with art in general sense, but also with an individual's creative abilities. De Fabriek's interest lies in the contribution that it can make to this. Aims The creation and maintenance of conditions under which art can be produced, presented and discussed. To function via the work of artists as a meeting place for artists amongst themselves and for artists and public. To develop its activities independently, but without excluding cooperation with other organisations To offer possibilities to artists to device, realise and show projects that will be of benefit of both art and the artist. To show and provide information to artists and the public about other projects within a similar framework. The promotion of contacts and exchanges between artists and artists initiatives, both regionally, nationally and internationally. Artists working in De Fabriek: In De Fabriek the presentation and production of art are combined. Artists invited for a workperiod in De Fabriek in principle have the whole building with all its facilities at their disposal. De Fabriek becomes their living and working space. The artist is directly involved in all aspects of carrying out his project, such as gathering the necessary material and equipment, financial accounting, designing and arranging an announcement and information to the press and public and making the necessary contacts for this. The presentation and exhibition are the public part of the work period.

The Red Carpet
The Red Carpet is an art route in the centre of Eindhoven which runs from St. Catherine's Church, past the Begijnenhof and Town Hall Square to the banks of the River Dommel. Along the route there are works by two American artists, Matt Mullican and Lawrence Weiner. There are also works by them in the collection of the Van Abbemuseum. You could say that the Red Carpet offers a foretaste of the art in the museum.
Matt Mullican (b. 1951)
Mullican tries to apply a certain ordering to the world. This ordering is the basis of his work. He makes frequent use of symbols and simple signs comparable to the pictograms seen at railway stations and airports. In this way he makes the world clear: in these pictograms images are simplified and superfluous details are left out.
Mullican divides the world into five systems or 'cosmologies'. He calls them: the material, the world, the framed world, the sign and the subject. These five cosmologies can be found in many of his works.
Finally, Mullican also often uses so-called 'charts' - these are diagrams that look like ground plans. With the aid of these charts he presents his view of the world.
In 1997 Matt Mullican made ten works for the Red Carpet. They range from high to low, the highest at the church and the lowest at the Dommel.
Lawrence Weiner (b. 1942)
Weiner takes the view that an artwork need not necessarily be made from a particular material in particular forms. If you want to convey an image, it is enough to give a description in words. So much of his work consists of short texts supplemented by punctuation marks.
For the Red Carpet Weiner has created eleven lampposts and two artworks.
