Heusden Fortress is a beautiful fortified town. Every weekend thousands of excursionists and boaters admiring the old fortress and the historic center. On the many cafes and cozy restaurants is usually buzzing. Every Sunday in Heusden Fortress Sun.shopping and on sunny days the streets are filled whatsoever. with shopping tourists. Most tourists stay in hotels in Heusden in 's Hertogenbosch, Drunen or Waalwijk. Heusden Fortress is not far from Den Bosch, The Efteling and Drunense Dunes. From Den Bosch departs every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday a boat to Heusden Fortress.
Heusden is a place that you can discover by foot easily. We did a boot tour on the river Maas, starting in ’s-Hertogenbosch. After arriving we walked around the old city which is very nice. In the harbor, you can find restaurants and coffeeshops, to get your coffee after your walk.
Best time to do this is from April till October.

The cruise company RONDVAART WILJO0-HEUSDEN has two ships - cruise and partyboat Wiljo and partyboat Zeearend. A cruise from Heusden is a great experience with nice villages on the dikes and beautiful scenery in the floodplains.

Helpfulness
The ruins of what once was an old fortress can still be visited. Although not more than a dry moat, a few cannons and a layer of stone, it's an interesting stroll and you can access the nigher fortifications from here.

A stroll along the edge of the small city on top of the fortifications is another must. The views of the surrounding coutryside and rivers are beautiful. It gets pretty windy here, tought, so wrap up!

The main (protestant) church of Heusden is also called the Catharinakerk. It's a beautiful example of late medieval craftsmanship. Typical of these Dutch churches is the use of brick and, because it's a protestant church, the interior is pretty stark. See the Travelogue for more details!

We got to climb up into this windmill to see it in operation .... they were grinding corn.
Windmills have always played a great part in the life of Holland and its inhabitants. They served to grind corn, to remove excess water from the low-lying districts, and to saw timber, thus making the country fit for human habitation.
Windmills form an important element in the Dutch landscape with its wide horizons, its glittering waters and big fluffy clouds floating overhead; without them we can hardly imagine this landscape, which is unique in the world.

The harbour with the boats, the drawbridge and the windmills is the most beautiful part of the village.

Today we sat on a terrace near the harbour looking at the boats that search for a place in the little harbour. We watched the boats navigate through the small entrance.

An other way to visit Heusden is by post carriage. Every time I am in Heusden I see the same old man driving the carriage, he must be hundred by now!

Park your car at the edge of the town, it is about a 10 minutes walk at a footpath along the water to the centre.
