The ruins of what once was an old fortress can still be visited. Although not more than a dry moat, a few cannons and a layer of stone, it's an interesting stroll and you can access the nigher fortifications from here.

  • De Grote Kerk

The main (protestant) church of Heusden is also called the Catharinakerk. It's a beautiful example of late medieval craftsmanship. Typical of these Dutch churches is the use of brick and, because it's a protestant church, the interior is pretty stark. See the Travelogue for more details!

  • HEUSDEN SNACK BAR

As it was lunch time, I started looking for a Snack Bar. After asking around, we found the CAFETARIA FRIET & ZO. It was just what we were in the mood for. We ordered 3 Krokets Vlees, portie sate', friet mayonnaise and drinks. The bill came to Euro14,50 for the three of us. Everything was delicious. Kroket - Kroketten - minced meat encased in...

  • De Pannenkoekenbakker

This restaurant has earned its excellent reputation. On various occasions, 'De Pannenkoekenbakker' was called the Best Pancake House in the country. If you've eaten here you'll understand why! They don't do reservations, so you're just going to have to show up and be lucky. Mostly everything here is good (and you get loads of food), but do try the...

This wine-tasting joint is also located on the Vismarkt in a beautiful house called Commiezenhuis. Although not a very hopping night, the wine tasting can be quite fun if you accidently swallow your samples, rather than spitting them out :-)

Heusden Transportation

  • Park and walk

Heusden is only about 10 minutes by car from 's-Hertogenbosch. Drive on the A59 towards Waalwijk and take exit 42 towards Heusden. Just follow the signs from there. The town is very small: on the map the distance from the western gate to the eastern gate is only about 600 metres. You can also see the beautiful star-shaped outline of the old...

This village is small enough to walk around in. I don't think you can drive into the village unless you live there anyway. You park outside and walk into town. That's the impression I remember and frankly, it was nice to walk about without the traffic! The picture has the only cars in town that I remember, but I'm sure there were others... the...
