"Verlaenghe" means "Desire" in Dutch, and it is spelled in a very old-fashioned way (nowadays people write "verlangen"). The restaurant opened (very) late 2005 in the former "Puur" restaurant. Where former owner Alex van Rossem of Puur ("pure") tried to set up a top class restaurant (and succeeded to some extend), Rene and Ruth (the owners of 't Verlaenghe) just want to serve good quality food for an affordable price. The kitchen is (southern) European, which means that they mainly serve a mixture of Spanish, Italian and French food.
't Verlaenghe serves some (surprise) menus for around EUR 30 per person for 4 courses, wine excluded. House wines are about EUR 17 per bottle, and most other wines vary between EUR 20 and EUR 25 per bottle. These prices are comparable to the former Puur restaurant. However, if you eat a la carte, 't Verlaenghe's prices are definitely lower that those of Puur.
't Verlaenghe has a capacity of about 40 guests, excluding the terrace with about 15 seats (weather permitting). The terrace is nice, but very close to the road. Although there is a maximum speed of 30 km/h, the traffic can sometimes be a bit busy and some people think they are very tough if they drive around very fast in their old car with loud music.
Generally spoken, the experience and quality of 't Verlaenghe are indeed on a lower level than with Puur before. However, the difference is not dramatic and 't Verlaenghe is without doubt a good addition for Veghel. 't Verlaenghe is open for both lunch and dinner. Particularly for business lunches and dinners, I think it is the best place in Veghel to go.
The currents owners, Jorgos and Barbara, have considerably upgraded the restaurant after taking it over from the previous owner October 2006. Santorini serves excellent quality Greek meals at reasonable prices. The quality of the meat is significanly better than other Greek restaurants. There are always guests, even on Tuesday or Wednesday. In the weekends, the restaurant is full almost every night, although it is very rare that you can't get a table.
Restaurant Santorini has about 60 seats, excluding the terrace with 20 to 25 seats (weather permitting). The terrace is not very nice. Although situated at the lovely market square with views on the monumental church and former town hall, there is much traffic close to the terrace and it is always in the shadow.
Main dishes are between EUR 13 and 18, with starters and deserts between EUR 5 and 9. The house wines are EUR 16 for a full liter, EUR 8 for half a liter and EUR 4 for a quarter of a liter.
The restaurant is closed on Mondays.
Matteucci, situated right in the middle of the market quare, sells ice and nin-alcoholic drinks. Their ice creams are very very good and they sell an incredible number of variations. There is also a take-away. It is common in Vgehel not to have a desert in the restaurant, but go to Matteucci right after the main course.
Matteucci is open from April to October to 10 o'clock in the evening, but has limited opening hours outside the season.
De Gouden Leeuw is a traditional bar / restaurant in a beautiful old building in the center of Veghel. The menu is international, but conservative (carpaccio, steak, ice cream etc.). The main dining room used to be a bar. It is a big room with a high ceiling. Everything is made of dark brown wood. There is no real restaurant atmosphere. Chairs are uncomfortable. There are guests that only have a drink at the counter, I guess that they are not very satisfied with De Gouden Leeuw's new focus on food instead of drinks.
The quality of the food is very average. Considering the unprofessional (clumsy) service, the price / quality ratio is not very good.
De Gouden Leeuw has a terrace and a sun lounge. The terrace is situated along a busy road and gets little sun. It is not very attractive compared to the terraces on Veghel's central market square. Unless you want to see young people driving by with loud music very close to your table (less than 2 meters). The sun lounge is pretty okay, but I suggest that you just go there for a coffee on a rainy day.
Favorite Dish: De Gouden Leeuw serves decent steaks.

That's probably why the main course took a while to come. However, the 8 yr old child in our company was served quickly, which was a nice gesture.
You can easily eat for under 15 euro, or even under 20 euro (two courses).
Favorite Dish: I enjoyed a pizza from the list of 'specials', the Pizza Kamilio with tomatoes, mozzarella, parma ham (very good!) and spicy salami (also excellent quality) and rocket salad. I also had a taste of the nice seafood risotto.
Greek restaurant Parthenon opened spring 2007. I'm not going to spend many words on it. The food is very moderate, the interior cheap, the atmosphere similar to McDonalds, and the service terribly slow and unmannered.
