This prominent and attractive church in the middle of the town as you head up to the main canal and cheese market past the Town Hall is a 15 th century church which contains the tomb of Count Floris V (ruled 1256-1296) and - the oldest church organ in the Netherlands!
Finished in 1520, Sint Laurenskerk houses the tomb of Floris V, Count of Holland (1254 -1296). It also houses the Hagerbeer Organ which dates to the 17th century.
The Great Saint Lawrence Church was built between 1470 and 1520 in the style of Brabant gothic. The inside of the church is fascinating: the richly decorated wooden vault with the Final Judgement, a beautiful painting from Cornelis Buys above the choir area, remarkable gravestones and the tomb of count Floris V, two famous organs: the Van Covelens or Choir organ from 1511 and the magnificent Van Hagerbeer-Schnitger or Grand organ with the largest casing doors in the world - so this is really a must see sight!
The great or St Laurens church is main focus point in this city. Its an basilique from the 15th century. The interior of this church is wonderfulll in its simplicity.
Nowadys this church is mainly in use as concert hall and exhibition space. The organ must be very special for music recitals.
