Around Alkmaar by canal boat
a bonus was to find out about the opportunity of canal tours around Alkmaar and so cheap - 4.75 and 5 euro for the two competing companies - was a matter of deciding which looked the best deal but when was revealed to have an enclosed boat and the other an open top for such a lovely, warm/hot day it was definitely the open top tour for me!
a great way to get around and see Alkmaar taking in the canals around the town centre where the canals are lined with residential homes and businesses but largely old homes some dates spotted as 17 or maybe 16 something, and then out into the large 'ring' canal that goes around Alkmaar.
the other boat goes out of Alkmaar and shows more of the countryside so you could do both if you wished or unlike me were staying around longer!
a nice opportunity too to relax and wind down and enjoy the sights for an hour or so after running around all day getting to Aalsmeer and then down to Alkmaar, rushing to find the cheese market and some shopping! and also enjoy the wonderful warm weather of Holland in July!
The tours went quite frequently - as often as the boat emptied it was refilled and set off again so there was little waiting time really.Related to:

We took a car down to the Cheese Market in Alkmaar. It's not hard to find the place, but it's hard to look for a parking space. My advice to you is to go early! You won't loose out anything if you go early...believe me... ;-)
buses around the area
watch out, they stop running very early (like 10pm). so if you are out late in alkmaar and need to get back you have to get a train. always plan for this in advance and make sure you buy a train taxi ticket - its the cheapest and most convinient way to get home after a night out
The Canal Boat Tour
Take the canal boat tour to discover Alkmaar from the water.
Startpoint: Mient (close to the Waagplein).
