    Take the train

The easiest way to get to Alkmaar is by train. You can get there from Amsterdam Central Station in about 30 minutes, or do as we did and travel straight from Schiphol. For the latter you’ll need to change either at Sloterdijk, and it will take about 50 minutes. The trains are clean, frequent and punctual, and seating is arranged on two levels (which means you need to be able to carry your luggage up at least a short flight of steps). We paid 7.90 euros each way for this journey, but I found out afterwards that we could have saved 1 euro by buying the tickets at a machine rather than at the ticket window.

To get to Alkmaar from Amsterdam, the train is the easiest and fastest way. It takes about a half hour and is comfortable and cheap. Once in Alkmaar, walking is the nicest way to see the town, and in some cases the only way, as some streets are closed to traffic.
