Albert Cuyp - Street Markets, Amsterdam
The place I like most in Amsterdam is the Albert Cuyp market. It's a general market where you can go to get your groceries but also to get specials bargains. Not any out of the ordinary market really but since I've lived in the area for most of my life this is a place I always like to go to. Just strolling along the stands and have a look in the shops behind the stands
is just a fun thing to do. Like to go best on weekdays, not so busy as Saturday.
Fondest memory: The best things about Amsterdam are the beautiful old buildings that show the history of the city and the new architecture that shows its future. The city is a 'historical map' that you read best if you walk through it. When I've been away this is what I miss most, walking through the city.
If you happend to be in Amsterdam on a Saturday you can visit the famers market (Boerenmarkt) on the square around Noordenkerk. You can buy anything from biodynamic vegetabliles, cheese, flowers, musrooms, breed and much much more.
Fondest memory: I find Amsterdam most beautiful in the dusk. Go for a long walk along the canals or take an evening tour-boat to see Amsterdam by night.
Fondest memory: Something is always happening on market day as the venders hawk their goodies and locals gather to trade gossip. I must have had an honest face because one lady asked me to watch her stall so she could sneak away to the bathroom. I returned every day to see if she needed a break and that sort of familiarity often leads to a better appreciation of any city. She rewarded me with a little bag of sweets from her stall. It's a good thing that she didn't have a raw fish stall. :)
Albert Cuyp street
Amsterdam's most famous day market, with stalls lining both sides of the Albert
Cuyp street. Like all other daymarkets, in part due to stronger legislation
regarding the sale of perishables, this icon of Amsterdam street trade sees a shift
towards the sale of cheap textiles. It still retains some of its old charm though,
and especially on a sunny day the Albert Cuyp is a bustling multicultural street
filled with the famous Amsterdam humor. Don't miss the fish vendors, and if
you're lucky you might witness the unsurpassed act of a hawker trying to sell you
the latest in potato peelers. Open Mon-Sat 8am-6pm (closes earlier in winter, and
can close early due to bad weather).
