I think the most famous of these bridges is the "magere brug" show in my front page. In 1963 Amsterdam put a lot of iron gates along the canals to protect cars from falling in the water, however they can't prevent that at least once a week a car ride into one of the canals. While visiting Amsterdam, one good option is to do a tour by boat around the channels. That will provide a beautiful view of this beautiful city and allow you to get an overview of Amsterdam. Unfortunately i had no time left for this, since i thought i would do it by the end of my short visit, but i had no time left for this. On Centraal Station's square you can find several boats that will do city tours. Leave a Comment

More often I guide people around in Amsterdam, the number one tourist attraction in my country. One sticks out above all others. During the international choir festival (2001). I guided a wonderful Czechian girls-choir (Kantilena from Hradec Kralovy) around in our capitol and we had such fun. The expressions while walking through the red-light-district, hahaha. I will never forget the proud faces of three of them telling me secretly they got their hands on a joint. Thanks to them, especially to Magdalena and Tereza, for a perfect time. Leave a Comment

Water and the construction of many bridges have been of vital importance to Amsterdam’s development over the years. Along the banks of the river Amstel a city developed that heavily depended on the water for its survival, for defense, trade and to drink. It is often called the Venice of the North, and with good reason! Your get Wooden Girder Bridges, Brick Arched Bridges, Movable Bridges and Iron and Steel Leaf Bridges. All used at different times for different things, changing with the times and development. All add to the character and charm that is Amsterdam.
One of my fondest looks here is when you look straight on at a bridge and see so many other bridges in your vision at the same time down the canal. Leave a Comment

This part of Amsterdam is endearing. We loved the river life of the canals, seeing people go about their business - one boat had a lady sitting on an actual SOFA in their boat whilst hubby was rowing away... haha... It looked out of place, but at least she was comfortable :) Leave a Comment

Take a canal boat tour of the gorgeous city if you can. In fact if you are on a layover at the Airport I would recommend that you hop on a quick train to the city centre and take a canal tour. They are only about two to three hours long and are a great way to become aquainted to this lovely city. There are several stops where your can board the boats through out the city including at the Amstel Train Station. There are also day tickets that you can purchase and use through the day as an alternative means of transportation. While on the boat a cruise guide will give you information on the various sight that you pass as you snake your way around the canals. They also give you information about the canals themselves and how they periodically flush the water out back into the sea.
The canal boat tour of Amsterdam is a photographers dream. Do not forget you camera and bring lots of film on your voyage. There will be lots of photo opportunities. Leave a Comment

In the past there was not enough living accomodation for the inhabitants of Amsterdam that is why the city of Amsterdam legalize living at houseboats. Each of the houseboats has their own mailadres and each of them are conected to electricity. Leave a Comment

There are so many favorite sites and places to see in and around this city, choosing only one is impossible. Incredible people truly made Amsterdam my favorite destination. From the open air markets, to the wealth of culture and fantastic art museums, to great dining, partying and happiness everywhere I went. One thing you must do is SEE Amsterdam from it's canals. A daytime and nighttime canal sightseeing tour is an absolute must if you want to feel this cities heartbeat. The Wine and Cheese candlelight canal tour by Kooy was one of the most enjoyable 2-hours of total relaxation I experienced all week. 'Museumboot' during the day is another all day adventure not to be missed. (Please see my amsterdam travelogue for more pix and details)
Queensday 'Koninginnedag' parties and street festival extravaganza on Queen's birthday! This one-day (ahem...2-day) party was so 'goed', I'll be there next year decked out in my brightest orange attire. And ohhh how I miss those Stroopwafels... Leave a Comment

"Sailing round the world in a dirty gondola oh, to be back in the land of Coca-Cola!" - Bob Dylan Instead of a dirty gondola.... change that to - "Cruising round Amsterdam in a fine glass-roofed boat. Oh to be back in the land of Heineken!" I think Bob Dylan can see the humor behind this....
Surely one of the best ways to explore Amsterdam is to cruise around the canals in one of these glass-roofed canal boats. As it meanders through the network of canals, you'll be awed by the delightful sight of elaborate galded houses and narrow hump-backed bridges flashing by....
