    Shopping streets

by Erkmen Updated Dec 9, 2004 632 reviews

Favorite thing: When you take the road from Central station till Dam square and contine straight to Rokin.. you will see many shops, however the main place for shopping is the paralel street to these streets, which is closed for traffic and pedestrians can walk..

    Magna Plaza

Favorite thing: From the two sides of the national buildings roads are passing to the behind.. If you take the one of these roads you will come to N Z Voorburgwal street, which is paralel to Damrak..

The first spot you will see is the Magna Plaza, which is a very nice looking shopping mall..

Dont expect many stores inside but this four stored mall is an interesting place to visit....

    The Nieuwendijk/Kalverstraat Strip

    Crowds on the Nieuwendijk/Kalverstraat Strip

Favorite thing: The Nieuwendijk/Kalverstraat Strip is a pedestrian walkway that seemingly bisects Amsterdams old quarter. It features outstanding shopping. For this reason it can get quite crowded on weekends and after work hours.

Fondest memory: I am not really a big nut for buying clothing abroad but there are a great number of clothing stores here and not just the usual franchises like the Gap but independent shops too. I also found some very good music shops and the best book shops that I have seen in Europe.

    Magna Plaza

Favorite thing: All stores are about to close in 30 minutes.... we enter Magna Plaza just to have a look inside it, as we were told it has very beautiful decoration being an ex Central Post Office....
Two completely lost young Brit gals rush to us and ask where they can find Cinderella shop....
    - Oh, it's on Kalverstraat
    - Oh, where? where? Show it to us! (and they poke unto us a crumpled city map).
    We show, they seem relieved....
    - Is it the place where we can buy party gowns?
    - Errr, not exactly... we think it's a shoe shop... More over it's closing in 15 minutes.
    - ....???!!!!!
In a minute fraction we see the gals rushing to Magna's exit.... hope, they'll have luck!

    Favorite thing: Shopping in Amsterdam

Shopping and culture go hand in hand in Amsterdam. The large department stores are situated on the Dam, on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, on the Rokin, on the Nieuwe Dijk, in the Kalverstraat and in the Leidsestraat.
A nice shopping mall is ‘Magna Plaza’ this mall is only a hundred meters away from the hostel.
Next to Magna Plaza there is the big supermarket 'Albert Heijn' where you can buy your groceries.

Favorite thing: the shopping centre near the amsterdam arena - there are a lot of cheap price-high quality products shops in that area. If you go there, get in the Media Market - they got good prices ****

artis zoo - the oldest in europe - pretty cool - i love to visit the insectorium and a sort of green house where you can feel (there are the tipical temp/insects/plants ecc) whats the feeling of being in several different types of forests ecc... ****

the nemo roof - a sort of futuristic beach - great view - very cool and relaxing sitting-on (or sleeping on) green bags ****

red light district - of course!! - lots of girls (some 50% of them are quite hot) - dance in the windows - you talk to them - negotiate the price and the time and enter the their room - they close the windows and ............(the rest is left to your imagination) :-) ****

btw - go to food plaza - behind the palace in the Dam square for reasonable food prices

Favorite thing: This is the rather splendid looking shopping centre called Magna Plaza, located behind the Royal Palace on Dam Square. I love how it appears against the night sky with all the lights.

Fondest memory: We really liked walking back to the hotel at night, seeing all the lights and people.
