The Amsterdam Historical Museum rejoices in a truly beautiful location, it was for centuries the home of the city’s orphans.
The museum opens onto one of Amsterdam’s busiest shopping streets, Kalverstraat.
In the urban centre, where once the little orphans of Amsterdam lived and learned, you can find out about the city’s history and the story of its people
Fondest memory:
It is the first and only sex museum that I have seen in Europe on Damrak 18. It has exhibits from the Roman era, and from all over the world including Greece, Japan, India and China. There's also a collection of paintings, figurines, comic strips, and thousands of pornographic photos from around the world. They even have a porno flick from the 1930's playing. There are a few coin-operated machines housed in booths, perhaps showing some pornographic scenes. I dunno cos I never try.
It is certainly an eye opener... Definitely not suitable for the innocent minded kids.
Favorite thing:
This is the only museum In Europe that show the history from Hemp.
The exhibition goes 8000 years back in time.
The museum also grow hemp, now and then the police comes in to see if things don't get out of hand.
Favorite thing: I think having a Sex Museum in one country is unique. Here, you will discover tons of amazing porn photos, both olds and news! some materials on exhibit, miniatures in different positions, and the statue of 'Marilyn Monroe' in wax.
Favorite thing:
I never had heard about the Museum Our Lord In The Attic and was very surprised to hear about the history of this remarkable museum.
A priest who hold his services in a hidden church in the center of Amsterdam, and got the assistance of about twenty spiritual virgins... and the area around got world-famous for its Red Light District-area! Can you imagine that ?!?
It struck me and I just got in time to visit the special exhibition about the Solitaty Sisters, or the "Spiritual Virgins at Out Lord in the Attic". Twelve artists have commisioned to create art-works, specially on the theme of women and their religion ...
Fondest memory:
I've worked in the Red Light District-area for fashion photography, I've visited the same area with a lot of friends to show them the beautiful "girls-in-the-windows" ...
For now I may join to them the place of the special museum Our Lord In The Attic where the "hidden women" or the "spiritual virgins" did their work, too ... of a religious, and very special quality. I am looking forward to do so ...

THE BIBLICAL MUSEUM
A small piece of bent wood in the gable of the museum refers to the surname of Jacob Cromhout, wich means 'bent wood'.In 1662 he had two magnificent canal houses built by the famous architect Philip Vingboons.

Well known for its world class art museums, Amsterdam also has some of the most unique museums in the world.
For instance, interested in the torture museums? If you’ve had your fill of art museums, you’ll never find a more complete collection of torture and punishment instruments from the inquisition chair to the guillotine. It is the perhaps the perfect place to take your children when they are misbehaving.
The Jewish Historical Museum is a combination of four former Jewish synagogues that have been transformed into the Amsterdam Jewish Museum. The permanent collection tells the story of Dutch Jewry and there is a kosher café as well as a well-stocked bookstore.
The Filmmuseum is the place for film fanatics. The sumptuous Art Deco Theatre shows ancient movies. It has the world’s most complete archive of the early film industry.
There is an Erotic Museum. The first floor is the best. The most popular piece is an amusing sculpture of a woman pedaling a bike that delivers a delightful bonus surprise. Nearby is The Sex Museum.

Probably the most unique tour is a Behind the Scenes Tour of the Red Light District. Rob van Hulst, native and expert of the red-light district, presents the entire red-light area as a living museum, commenting on the history of the area’s development and taking you into the trendiest places. He is the only tour guide licensed for the red light district. And I know you are wondering how does a man get a job like that.
Amazing Amsterdam offers things not available anywhere else in the world
Favorite thing:
The tropenmuseum is located in one of the finest buildings in Amsterdam. As you will see when you are inside the museum, it consists of an impressive hal with a glass dome at a height 22 meters. This light-hall is surrounded by galleries arranged in three layers. Here, about ten exhibitions offer a many-sided picture of human life in the tropics and subtropics.

Jewish Historical Museum
At the heart of the former Jewish quarter of Amsterdam stands the Jewish
Historical Museum. Opposite the museum is the 17th century Portuguese
Synagogue, still in use. In front of this stands the statue of the Dockworker,
symbol of the protest strike against the persecution of the Jews, held in
February 1941.
The Jewish Historical museum is famous both nationally and internationally. This wasof the Jewish history and culture. Often the themes have an international tone: we have shown the work of Chagall, told about the Sephardi diaspora, presented the story of the Jews of Russia etc..
