Zaanse Schans, Amsterdam
Make sure you visit Zaanse Schans!!!
It is like an open air museum that has some great typical Dutch places to visit - a cheese making shop, a clog making 'factory', windmills crushing seeds and other great stuff! It's the perfect place for a non Dutch person to visit!! :) Although our Dutch friends enjoyed it too...

Favorite thing: Windmills, windmills, windmills... naturally, one must visit the windmills when in Amsterdam. Now, these 17th century structure & buildings were broken down & reassembled into an archetypal 'traditional' village in the late 50s so as to preserve the old way of life. ZAANSE SCHANS is where present day Dutch live in the cottages & do their daily tasks. Here, you'll get to see working windmills & the making of clogs.
See the demonstration of cheese making.
Fondest memory: Again at Zaanse Schans, you can get to see a demonstation of cheese making. After that, you can get to try different kinds of cheese. For those with the stomach for it, you should try the goat cheese. For myself, I love the smoked and garlic cheese. Don't forget to buy one back.
Fondest memory: If you have not seen a traditional windmill yet, then a visit to Zaanse Schans is going to be a worthwhile experience. You've seen enough pictures of beatiful windmills, so why don't go and see the real thing itself?
Favorite thing: More windmills at Zaanse Schans... Most of the windmills were operating the day we visited...it was great to see them!
The clog factory at Zaanse Schans... :)
It was interesting to see the 'high heeled' clogs, 'sandle' clogs, 'designer' clogs etc. Who would have thought?!! :)
On the banks of Zaan, you can check out these:
1) The 'De Bleeke Dood' floor mill.
2) The 'De Ooievaar' mill.
3) The 'De Schoolmeester' paper mill.
Favorite thing: Ohhhh...Windmills..They are so beautiful!! I visited a village called De Zaanse Schans, not far from Amsterdam where I could see lots of them.
Yes, I know - tourist trap, but its all fun! When you see a big set of clogs just lying there, of COURSE you have to clamber in and take a photo!
(That's me in the big one.)
Take a photograph of the giant clog at Zaanse Schans.
Fondest memory: Well, its one of my favorite photographs. I feel like a child again.
