Coffee Shops, Amsterdam
here in america we appreciate that ooozing resin getting all over your lips and weed in your mouth, it wouldn't be a joint without all that..i represented the old u.s while over in the dam on quite a few occasions. i saw some japanese kids using a rolling machine lol....he he rookies!!!
The word coffeeshop has become synonymous with a special kind of coffee shop. These places do sell coffee and have one or more tables to sit and drink it but, their primary commodity is cannabis. These days they are licensed by the local council and subject to regulation. A strict minimum age of 18 is enforced.
Holland is THE Mecca for those who wish to experience cannabis and marijuana (drugs) culture. We passed by some 'coffeeshops' here where we could clearly see people smoking marijuana and cannibis - yes, even along the pavements! I didn't realize (until I was told later by a native Dutch) that these coffeeshops sometimes have a separate counter where they sell cannabis to their customers!! Wow, talk about freedom and open-mindedness.
To save yourself some embarassement and really enjoy your time at the coffeeshops in Amsterdam, you need to smoke joints and not bongs or pipes. The locals stick strictly to joints and usually talk *** about anyone who isn't. So to avoid being made to feel like some kind of dumb ass that doesn't know what he's doing role a joint!!! Now if you don't know how to roll a joint, its nothing to be ashamed of or worried about. You can purchase a metal cone/pen like roller, in any head shop, that allows even the most inexperienced smoker to roll a perfect torpedo.
The coffee shops are not designed for comfort and this seems to be a deliberate attempt to stop people from frequenting the establishments for too long. It is worth noting that there is very little trouble relating to alcohol abuse in the town as alcohol is not available in coffee shops and is generally only drunk with meals.
There is a difference between a COFFEEHOUSE and a CAFE/BAR. A coffeehouse 99% of the time would sell/serve soft drugs while a cafe would serve you what you would expect from a cafe. So if you are looking for a cup of coffee to perk you up, make sure you open the right door otherwise you'll find something else that will awaken you.
In holland marijuana is tolerated. It is sold by coffee shops. These coffe shops are licenced and are seen as a way to seperate marijuana smokers from the 'underworld'. The dutch goverment belives that drug use is a health problem not a criminal issue. The coffe shops are clean, safe places and are basically the same as many coffeshops around the world, except in holland they sell herb! ! When looking at the statistics on drug use in holland compared to other places in the world it is clear that thier policies are working, Holland is a safe country with a low crime rate and low drug abuse rate compared to contries like america who have taken a completly different aproach to this issue.
Listen being in this part of the world is great the city is amazing.

Just stay in the coffee shops and smoke, then venture outside to experience all that AmDam has to offer! It is a cool place, but we should still respect those who don't smoke.
Just the fact that marijuana is tolerated and sold openly in coffeeshops makes this country a cultural delight:) True Freedom!
Amsterdam is famouse for all its coffeeshops and the red light district...
And in Amsterdam you can be sure that you meet a lot of funny people.... (some of them is STONED...hehe)
There is a diffrence between a Cafe and a coffe shope. The Coffe shops may sell a little more than coffe. It was a good time had by all!
Remember that Coffee shops in The Netherlands are not the place to be for a refreshing cup of coffee!!
Amsterdam is famous all around the word for the coffeshops, but as I think if you want to know more about they you have to visit a specific site, I just give you a short intro.
