Someone is enjoying a Febo! by mazzap Before I visited Amsterdam - I read on VT (of course!) about Febo's. Naturally I had to try something from this fast food snack place. For just 1 Euro I was pleasantly surprised with my instant hot snack - I can't remember the name of it - it looked like a typical Dutch croquette. Self serve yourself from the coin operated mini windows - the food is replenished regularly and is served piping hot on a little paper plate - it fills a gap for a while - just what you expect for your money really! By the way - I don't know the 'model' demonstrating the food in my pic - he just wouldn't move out of the way!! Leave a Comment

fries by tattud_gurl This is a typical dutch treat you HAVE to try. You can get them anywhere on the street. Top them with mayo AND onions.....tastes just like a Mickey D's burger, only no meat....swear. I had them several times while I was there. It's a perfect cheap snack. Anyplace is good..there's Frank and Fries, there's Moaz, and several other chains. All as good as the other. Leave a Comment

by ana_21 Never outside the Netherlands have I met such a custom - in fast foods like FEBO and similar they serve french frites with the huge drop of mayonaise!! During my stay in Amsterdam I sort of got used to this but I remember the first impression! Of course, you may have your frites with ketchup as well but you will find that mayonaise is much more popular. Anyway, believe me, this is something you buy and in few minutes regret it - unless you are really REALLY hungry :-) Leave a Comment

by dlandt These are kind of like deep fried mashed potatoes and gravy. They're local fast food and where they aren't heaven on earth, they are a tasty snack and are typically Dutch. They shouldn't be much more than a euro. You find them in the same place you find local fast food, they look like breaded and fat cigars. You can get one in one of these places, but I wouldn't recommend it. Leave a Comment

Good ol Fritessaus (Fritter Sause?) in Amsterdam by BruinKristin French fries (chips) are Fritters in Holland and Fritter sauce is not ketchup. No, it's this yummy mixture of mayonnaise and maybe relish and mustard? Have you seen Pulp Fiction? John Travolta monologues this nicely : ) Anyhow, try it! It is very very tasty -- although quite unhealthy I can imagine, but what the heck you're on vacation/holiday! Leave a Comment

Febo is a Dutch version of McDonalds (though they have that too), whose most interesting aspect was the vending machine style take-away food. All Febo take-away's had a self-service section where you put in the money and get the fries/burgers or whatever. I've never seen this type of service for fast food before and it sure didn't look very appetising, though it seemed popular. I don't eat take-away food as a rule, so I certainly wasn't going to buy it from a vending machine! Leave a Comment

After we had walked and drunk for a few hours just after we arrived in Amsterdam we found ourselves looking for somewhere to eat. What we found was a narrow shop selling chips/fries. We had to wait in the cold but when they came they were something else. We put the the thick mayo on them and ate them as we lurched back to the hotel. This is not behaviour we would adopt anywhere else but it is an experience not to be missed. Near Beurs Passage on Damrak. Leave a Comment

If you're in the area near Dam go to Frank n' Fries. Fresh, piping hot potato wedge fries sloshed with mayo.... mouthwatering! Leave a Comment

Favourite by Dutch students: "patatje oorlog" (chips "war" with mayonaise and peanut-sause). Also favourite: "patatje speciaal" (chips with mayonaise, onions and ketchup- or tomatosaus). Eat it on the street.
